Azelf Legendary Arena, but I can only use coverage moves [Pokemon Masters EX]

(Since there aren’t any replayable boss battles this week, I recorded this video last week to fill in the gaps.)

I’ve had this idea of using only coverage moves for a while now, but I could never find the right opportunity to do it. Being locked out of using moves that have the same type as your sync move not only makes a lot of pairs unusable, but makes some of the usable pairs much harder to work with (think Zinnia and Aerial Ace). Azelf’s Legendary Arena is thankfully flexible enough for this kind of clear, so I went with it.

While we’ve had units with coverage moves since Day 1 (Aura Sphere Clawitzer, Crunch Stoutland), they’ve become a lot more common in the past year or so, especially when units with three attacks started becoming a norm. I was also one of the people who thought all those Galarian units having three attacks meant they were being set up for dynamax – I don’t know if it’ll still happen but it’s looking less likely.

Here’s how each battle went, and the sync grids used:

Team 1: Lana / Lisia / EX SC Jasmine – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=021500033400&s0=5&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=0&t0=4411&g0=AAECAwQFBgcSFBUWFx0eHyEiIyQ&v1=016000075200&s1=3&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=0&t1=44114&g1=AAECAwQFBggJCwwNDxATFhcl&v2=011301079700&s2=5&l2=140&r2=5&p2=0&a2=0&t2=44111&g2=AAECAwQFBggLDhATFhkmKSs

Teambuilding for this started with the supports since there aren’t a lot with coverage moves. SC Jasmine was one of the special few who not only had a 1-bar coverage move, but had MGR 9 to go with it. She was the perfect buffer for Lisia, who needs full-on offensive buffs to wreck havoc. Her Defog also helped against the +1 evasion in the third HP bar. Lana completed the team with her Defense buffs and on-type coverage move.

Team 2: Allister / Selene / EX Palentines Bea – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=012300072400&s0=5&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=0&t0=41111&g0=AAECAwQFERQVFhgZGx8gISgrLQ&v1=025100009400&s1=2&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=0&t1=41111&g1=AAECAwQFBhETFBUWFxweHyMlJyg&v2=025001058400&s2=3&l2=140&r2=5&p2=0&a2=0&t2=44111&g2=AAECAwQFBggKDRASExQXGhsmKCst

Palentines Bea is another one of those blessed few with a 1-bar coverage move, and it can even reliably flinch, which is always a great counter to Azelf’s shenanigans. Since I had more flexibility with the rest of my team, I went with a double-Restrain team in Allister and Selene. Allister dealt a lot of damage with Sludge Bomb and slightly less with Drain Punch, while Selene activated his multipliers with Spirit Shackle. He even gets to show off his max move.

Team 3: EX Raihan / Thorton / EX Kiawe – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=004100043700&s0=5&l0=140&r0=4&p0=0&a0=0&t0=41414&g0=AAECAwQFBggRExYZHB8jJSkqLQ&v1=025700088400&s1=3&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=0&t1=44141&g1=AAECAwQFERQVFxgeICEjKCs&v2=014900010501&s2=3&l2=140&r2=5&p2=0&a2=0&t2=44114&g2=AAECAwQFBggLDhARExQVFxgl

Similar to Allister, Raihan’s coverage moves cover both of Azelf’s gimmicks, and he has the stats to back both of them up. Thorton comes back from his spotlight video yesterday to help out with flinches and Telekinesis. Kiawe is the tank because of Shadow Bone, but he also helps out with his heals.

Team 4: EX Cyrus / EX Leaf / EX Sonia – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=001700013300&s0=5&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=0&t0=1111&g0=AAECAwQFBgcICQoLDA0TGhsdJSYnKCot&v1=019401048400&s1=5&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=0&t1=4111&g1=AAECAwQFBx8hIyQmJykqKzAzNA&v2=025900083500&s2=5&l2=140&r2=5&p2=0&a2=0&t2=44141&g2=AAECAwQFExYaHB4hIiMmKCssLQ

Sonia was the first support I had in my notes for this theme, but she was the last one to get a team. Cyrus appreciates Sonia’s crit buffs so he can use his energy elsewhere, while Leaf rounded out the team with her omni-buffs and deceptively strong Iron Tails, helped further by Sonia’s Defense debuffs.
