In the Scyther vs. Azelf video (https://youtu.be/QNkzksnTCBY), I mentioned how Scyther was one of the lucky few eggmons where all three of its versions had utility, and I argued in the comments that the only others I could think of were Kangaskhan and Aerodactyl. Well, here comes Gyarados raging in, and it (quite literally) blows every other species out of the water. It’s saying something when the Support unit that’s one of the rare F2P crit buffers is the least exciting version of the eggmon.

(If you haven’t already, I highly recommend reading Zinfogel’s entry on the three Gyarados in the Eggmon Compendium. It’s both insightful and hilarious: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kxM8KgAZjJzony2dkXxzswToB8jaZtVGoAP4WAmAN6M/edit)

I use all three of them in Sinnoh Champion Stadium and two of them in the Cobalion Legendary Arena here. Here’s how each battle went, and the sync grids used:

Vs. Bertha: Strike Gyarados / EX May / EX SS Blue – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=002101000900&s0=3&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=0&t0=44444&g0=AAECAwQFBhMWFyYnMTIzNA&v1=012600026000&s1=5&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=13016303&t1=44444&g1=AAECAwQFExQWGB0fIiMkJygq&v2=0

I don’t know where Strike Gyarados’ Hyper Beam ranks among the other Hyper Beams, but it’s hilariously strong under rain. May gives RageRage that rain, which is also helpful in this stage to take out the sand, while SS Blue completes her offensive buffs and keeps the gauge going. At 5/5 Hyper Beam has more BP than the sync move, which is why RageRage gives the syncs to her teammates here.

Vs. Lucian: Tech Gyarados / Nessa / Event Bugsy – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=004500012300&s0=5&l0=140&r0=4&p0=0&a0=0&t0=44114&g0=AAECAwQFBgcREhMaHB0eISIkJigqLQ&v1=024900083400&s1=3&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=13010602&t1=4411&g1=AAECAwQFBggKDA0OHSAiLi8&v2=0

Zinfogel called Tech Gyarados the best eggmon in the game, and it’s pretty easy to see why. A 60% flincher is already very useful in eggmon standards, but DripDrip can also make the rain fall. It’s the Acerola of rain that exchanges the one-bar flinch and teamwide buffs for access to Hyper Beam, which can come in clutch in certain situations – just like the last move here. Nessa is only one of many units that appreciates rain, while Event Bugsy completes Nessa’s buffs and provides debuffs for Relentless.

Vs. Flint: Support Magikarp / EX Bianca / EX Palentines Bea – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=025001058400&s0=3&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=0&t0=44111&g0=AAECAwQFBggKDRATFBUaGyYoKy0&v1=010200051800&s1=5&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=13010602&t1=44444&g1=AAECAwQFBggKDQ8SExUdICMlLi8&v2=0

Like I said above, Support Magikarp is IMO the least exciting of the three eggmons, and even then SplashSplash is leagues above a lot of other support eggmons because of his access to Dire Hit All. He even has Endurance, which I use here for an extra turn thanks to the burn damage. I was originally using him with Barry and Elio for the Water type skill, but this stage has Condition Shield, so I switched to a flinching tank in PalBea and an on-type damage-dealer in Bianca.

Vs. Cobalion: Strike Gyarados / EX Classic Elesa / EX Spring Burgh – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=017001017500&s0=2&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=0&t0=44141&g0=AAECAwQFExobHB4gISMmKSor&v1=010601058700&s1=3&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=0&t1=44111&g1=AAECAwQFERUWFxgaIyQlKCkqLQ&v2=0

Nothing more cathartic than KOing a legendary with an eggmon haha. Classic Elesa gives RageRage the space to spam Hyper Beam thanks to her omni-debuffs. She also gets sync priority here as her innate multiplier takes advantage of her own debuffs. Spring Burgh is the crit buffer as I also needed his defensive buffs, heals, and one-bar move.

Vs. Cobalion: Tech Gyarados / EX Archie / BP Surge – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=003500002600&s0=3&l0=140&r0=4&p0=0&a0=0&t0=44114&g0=AAECAwQFBggLDQ4QExQVGiwu&v1=019300038200&s1=3&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=13016303&t1=44141&g1=AAECAwQFERQXGhseICEk&v2=0

As a flincher, Tech Gyarados is a great asset for many Legendary Arenas, and putting DripDrip above the other flinching eggmons is his innate MGR 2, which is very helpful for gauge management. I didn’t want to bring DripDrip without using Rain Dance, so I paired him with Archie, who appreciates the prolonged rain. Archie’s gridded for Thunder here to save on gauge as well as for Shower Sync to keep the rain going, which is why he gives the first few syncs to BP Surge and his Synchro Healing.

(I also mistakenly didn’t get Thunder Wave Accuracy +10 from BP Surge’s grid, which led to some frustrating misses. At least it didn’t affect the run too much.)
