0:00 – Vs. Champion Stadium Lucian: Whitney / EX Gladion / Red
2:30 – Vs. Tornadus Legendary Gauntlet: Whitney / EX Fall Hilbert / Support Starmie
7:54 – Vs. Extreme Battle Event – Ethan’s Epic Effort: Whitney / BP Morty / BP Surge
Despite having the worst type in the game, I think Whitney’s grid is the most interesting of the three that released in this month’s PoMa Day. She now has a strong sync nuke as well as a 60% chance to both paralyze and flinch. Add in Defense Crush 4 and you have a pretty solid tech unit, and add in her trainer move and she can tank when needed. I have Vigilance on her because of Gauntlet, but I was also thinking of giving her Defense Crush 2 to double-down on that niche.
I used her across three boss battles to explore her niches. Here’s how each battle went, and the sync grids used:
Vs. Lucian: Whitney / EX Gladion / Red – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=011900077300&s0=5&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=0&t0=44444&g0=AAECAwQFBggLDhAVGBklLi8&v1=002600024100&s1=5&l1=140&r1=4&p1=0&a1=0&t1=41111&g1=AAECAwQFBggLDhscHyEiIyQmKA&v2=000000014300&s2=2&l2=140&r2=5&p2=0&a2=0&t2=44111&g2=AAECAwQFBgcICRETFBUXGhweICMlJico
With her new grid, Whitney’s able to combine both of Kukui’s utilities in one move – Stomp has a 60% chance to flinch thanks to Aggravation 1 and a 50% chance to reduce Defense thanks to Defense Crush 4. This means she can just focus on spamming Stomp (with gauge permitting) instead of having to switch between Accelerock and Leer. Gladion and Red complete the Normal-type trio, with this stage being yet another one that gives Gladion a niche as physical Ghost-types are quite rare.
Vs. Tornadus: Whitney / EX Fall Hilbert / Support Starmie – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=002040026200&s0=5&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=13010602&t0=4411&g0=AAECAwQFBgcICw4cHSAjJSYp&v1=002600024100&s1=5&l1=140&r1=4&p1=0&a1=0&t1=41111&g1=AAECAwQFBggKCw4PEBEaGx4h&v2=012120&s2=1&l2=140&r2=1&p2=0&a2=0&t2=41&n2=1&f2=0
Whitney also happens to be a semi-reliable paralysis applicator as she now has Body Slam Hostile Environment 1 for a 60% proc rate. This obviously makes her a good pick for Tornadus, and her Defense debuffs means she can work well with a physical striker like Fall Hilbert, who even has Insult to Injury on his grid. Support Starmie is the tank here as StarStar can get the team to +6 Sp Def, complete Furbert’s Speed buffs for Ramming Speed, and has a 1-bar move that doesn’t compete with the gauge.
You can see how clutch this is at the end hahaha, but it’s a good display of Whitney’s other utility as a pseudo-tank since not only does she have a trainer move that can heal herself and give her +2 Defense, she also has several Guard skills on her grid to help her tank specific stages. Granted I don’t get to use any of those here, but it’s a good option to have for some stages.
Vs. Ethan: Whitney / BP Morty / BP Surge – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=014800042900&s0=3&l0=140&r0=4&p0=0&a0=0&t0=44411&g0=AAECAwQFBggREhMUFRgaHB4hJCUmJyot&v1=002600024100&s1=5&l1=140&r1=4&p1=0&a1=0&t1=41111&g1=AAECAwQFBggLDhEdICMpLC4v&v2=003500002600&s2=3&l2=140&r2=4&p2=0&a2=0&t2=41414&g2=AAECAwQFBggLDhATFBocHiEkJig
All Normal-type moves in the game have higher-than-usual BP to make up for the lack of SE coverage. While the power boost is only really notable for those with Hyper Beam and Shift passives, this also applies to Whitney’s sync move. Add in her three possible sync multipliers – Inertia, Interference Sync 5, and her innate Static Shock – and you get a pretty good sync nuke all things considered.
I decided to bring her to Ethan’s EBE as she’s now one of the few physical damage-dealers in the Kanto+Johto pool. BP Surge gives her offensive buffs and paralyzes reliably, while BP Morty provides defensive buffs and activates Interference Sync 5 with Confuse Ray. His flinches also buy some free turns here. This took some resetting since I needed to get the timing of these moves and flinches right, but seeing Whitney deal 5-digit sync nuke damage is surreal haha.
