0:00 – Vs. Maxie: EX Brendan / EX Spring Burgh / Winona
3:54 – Vs. Archie: EX Grovyle / Celebi / Dusknoir
6:25 – Vs. Maxie: EX SS Brendan / Lisia / EX May
9:40 – Vs. Archie: EX SS Brendan / EX SS Morty / EX Zinnia
Brendan heard that Maxie and Archie were back with their Tough Skin shenanigans again so he decided to take care of them himself hahaha.
I’ve seen a few posts saying that this EBE was easier than they remembered, and I think there are a few factors behind that. Aside from the obvious new units and new PoMa Day grids (Roxanne’s and Winona’s in particular are very helpful), the more accessible ways to invest in a unit (5-star power-up tickets, deluxe lucky cookies) means that rosters right now are a lot more invested than they were a year ago. The weather-setting supports like Ingo and SS Kris also make teambuilding for these fights a lot easier than they were before.
Don’t get me wrong though – these are still very difficult fights among EBEs, and I’d still rank the Maxie fight as among the toughest in the game because of how many gimmicks you have to account for. Longtime players are just in a much better position to actually properly address most (if not all) of those gimmicks instead of making compromises.
Here’s how each battle went, and the sync grids used:
Vs. Maxie: EX Brendan / EX Spring Burgh / Winona – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=017001017500&s0=2&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=17041601&t0=44141&g0=AAECAwQFExobHB4gISMmKSor&v1=001900025400&s1=5&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=18020301&t1=44444&g1=AAECAwQFBgkMDRAREhQXGBkbHiE&v2=004200027900&s2=5&l2=140&r2=3&p2=0&a2=21010101&t2=44441&g2=AAECAwQFBggLDg8QGh0fICE
I allude to it above, but Winona’s grid – while not really that good compared to her counterparts’ – really does a lot in helping make this fight easier. The big one is her 60% flinch of course, but she also gets some bulk and sync tiles to work with. I got both here thinking that I should sync with her for the special damage, but Brendan ended up doing more damage with his sync anyway so I could’ve optimized her grid even further. Spring Burgh completes the team since his Accuracy buffs take care of the side Charizard, his various other buffs are very helpful, and he’s bulky enough to live through the sync at near full health.
(Those last few turns were a rollercoaster of emotions haha, but it was fun.)
Vs. Archie: EX Grovyle / Celebi / Dusknoir – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=000201025100&s0=1&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=21010101&t0=44411&g0=AAECAwQFBgcICQoMERITFRobHB0jJCUmJyg&v1=001900025400&s1=5&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=18020301&t1=44444&g1=AAECAwQFBgkMDRAREhQXGBkbHiE&v2=004900047700&s2=5&l2=140&r2=5&p2=0&a2=17041601&t2=44111&g2=AAECAwQFBggKDQ4REhobHCYoKiwu
Wow, what a completely random group of three Pokemon! It definitely doesn’t remind me of the most heartbreaking scene in one of the greatest games ever-
Ahem, well, Celebi doesn’t take the Earthquake that well so it uses its guaranteed flinches on the Empoleon. Grassy Terrain beefs up Grovyle’s sync so that he makes even shorter work of Kyogre. Dusknoir tanks for the team and also helpfully refills the gauge when needed.
Vs. Maxie: EX SS Brendan / Lisia / EX May – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=021500033400&s0=5&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=13010602&t0=4411&g0=AAECAwQFBgcKExQWHR4fISI&v1=001901038100&s1=2&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=21010101&t1=44444&g1=AAECAwQFBgcKDQ8TFhclJikr&v2=012600026000&s2=5&l2=140&r2=5&p2=0&a2=13016303&t2=44444&g2=AAECAwQFERITFRYdHyIjJSYnKCo
SS Brendan’s Sp Def debuffs are very helpful in softening up the opponents for this fight, while Lisia’s evasion debuffs make the Charizard a lot less annoying to deal with. I may have May’s Mudkip unevolved, but it’s still more than enough to deal with this stage, as her sync nuke takes care of Groudon and Earth Power slowly chips away Charizard. Rain Dance MPR is nice but it’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t activate, but you’ll be relying more on Brendan’s Potions.
Vs. Archie: EX SS Brendan / EX SS Morty / EX Zinnia – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=014802025001&s0=3&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=21010101&t0=44411&g0=AAECAwQFBhMWFxgaHB4fIiYoKQ&v1=001901038100&s1=2&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=21010101&t1=44444&g1=AAECAwQFBgcKDQ8TFhclJikr&v2=012901038400&s2=5&l2=140&r2=5&p2=0&a2=13016303&t2=4411&g2=AAECAwQFBggJCgsMDQ8QESgrLQ
I believe power boosted Zinnia makes an F2P clear for this stage possible, as I saw some clears using her with Roxanne and Hop (here’s one from TheExplodingCider: https://youtu.be/n87k4vJB8Ec). That should give you an idea on how effective Zinnia is for this stage, and with an even more optimized support duo like SS Brendan and SS Morty, she shows Archie who has the better Hoenn legendary hahaha. SS Morty’s bulk is also ridiculous – did you see how little Archie’s sync did to him? I got Body-Bracing Infliction on his grid to help with the Empoleon’s Earthquake too.
