If this doesnt perfectly encapsulate why the right developer matters, especially on Switch, and why simply throwing more GPU/CPU power at crap code isn’t going to fix crap code, i dont know what will.

i should also add, having the right team AND the proper support from the publisher too. a amazing developer can still turn out a turd if unsupported and slammed with unrealistic deadlines by the publisher.
Watching the footage, the game looks visually impressive and it seems the frame rate is a bit more stable. So what’s this game about? Is it actually good?
Is worth buying now? See that they be Dinosaurs up in it and thinking getting as a gift for someone.
while the graphics look better that brightness/bloom looks fucking horrible
Ark on switch following the same journey that Ark on PC did.
People who argue that good optimization is what makes a switch run well, not lack of hardware are right. But people who argue for wanting a more powerful machine are right as well. I would love to see xenoblade 3 running on as high tech a device as the steam deck. It can really show at times that xenoblade 3’s scope really required a few engineering tricks (low res in handheld/at times while docked)
This doesn’t excuse releasing unfinished product. If you have to wait FOUR YEARS for a game you purchased in 2018 to be playable, it’s not worth it IMHO.
I love the Switch, but it’s about damn time Nintendo releases a new gen console, even if it’s only a Switch revision. Help game devs by giving them more leeway a prevent this kind of unacceptable situation in the first place.
Edit: typos
Anyone knows if The DLC maps will be buyable separatedly? I just want the viking one.
This re-port is awesome.
Just a heads up though, last night they released a 6GB update to the re-port that completely borked it. It crashes every 5-10 minutes and half the stuff I do makes the game crash. The first re-port version I downloaded, never crashed once in over 30 hours of play.
It will undoubtedly be fixed soon, but if you haven’t updated the re-port yet, do yourself a favor and wait until the next update, to update.
In the end it comes down to the same situation for Nintendo…It might be bad times when 3rd parties don’t show up, but when they do ports are often lazy… So it’s always important they get as much exclusive content in development, which is built specifically around their system, to ensure a regular flow of quality releases to compensate for when 3rd parties let Nintendo system owners down.
Yes, I hate when people put every single issues on switch’s power
Yes the switch is weaker then other consoles, but alot of the time its game optimization that’s the problem, and most of the time it’s ports that are like this because they can’t be bother putting in time to fix it (which is why most 1st party games run flawlessly, they put the time and effort into actually optimizing it FOR the switch, a big third party game that impresses me for that exact reason is Monster Hunter Rise, they made the game FOR the switch and if it was a port just thrown on I doubt it would have turned out as well)
but but but we NEEED more specs /s
I guess I’ll put this back on my wishlist.
While it is certainly true that more CPU/GPU won’t fix crap code, it might be the easiest way (for the devs) to fix crap graphics. Sure, you can get some huge improvements if you optimize and tailor the game for the respective system, but this of course takes time and money.
The switch runs now rather dated hardware and the disparity to modern consoles is quite big, so imho while it is a little bit sad it’s also kinda understandable if third party developers take the easy way and simple “export their games on min settings”, if they even bother to port their game at all. Third party games being usually overshadowd by Nintendo’s own lineup does also not help.
So is it out yet?
Just bought it, it was on sale. It’s the only version I could find and I think it’s the good one because on the store it says that’s it’s been updated to UE 4 with improved performances.
Thing is, all the maps are locked (except the base one) and I cant even buy them cause the eshop give me an error when redirecting me to the store page. Any ideas ?
All that does is highlight how much more difficult it is to develop a well optimized switch port. It requires a lot of extra time and resources, not to mention that not all devs have the same abilities/skills in the first place.
You have to be realistic and understand that many publishers will not find that feasible from a time, money, and/or profit projection standpoint when the switch is so far removed from the platforms these games are primarily developed for.
Devs aren’t “lazy” as so many people here like to label them. It’s business. The best thing that can be done to improve things is to have improved hardware, tools, and services that fit better in todays multi platform development world. That will help ALL devs universally. When so many games skip the switch and every other game has people complaining about quality and lazy devs, it’s time to look at the common denominator.
Of course optimization matters, but it’s not a one way street. Hardware absolutely matters. The platform holders need to do their parts as well to help ease the process because the more difficult and less profitable it is for publishers/devs the worse the quality and support will be, guaranteed.
