I also just caught one. I already evolved it. I think the shiny looks a bit better as a sandshrew. Sandslash looks just a bit darker than the normal one.

If I recall correctly, Niantic now “shiny boosts” newer accounts. So she’ll be more likely to see shinies than you, though I don’t know for how long.
