Honestly, there’s not much surprise here. By E3, Tears of the Kingdom will have launched, and with rumors it’ll likely be the last major-profile 1st party release before the Switch successor, it’s debatable if Nintendo will have anything bigger to show.
Having said that, given that Nintendo gets all the press they need from Directs alone, E3 is just a waste of money at this point.
Howwy23
Im sure they’ll still have a direct around the time it happens.
mrwho995
My guess is that this means no mainline Direct until September.
appleappleappleman
Personally, TOTK and Pikmin 4 this summer are plenty for me. I’m honestly fine if they don’t have a standard big Direct until September, there’s PLENTY to play, especially if NSO gets Pokemon games announced on Monday
Spazza42
Nintendo doesn’t even need E3 at this point, people will just watch their announcement videos on YouTube.

I know that Nintendo can do their own Directs without being part of E3 or anything, but from the past years it seems that the June Directs have always been dependent on Nintendo’s participation to E3.
* 2022: E3 is cancelled, no Direct.
* 2021: E3 is digital-only but Nintendo participates, so they do a Direct.
* 2020: E3 is cancelled, no Direct.
* 2019 and before: E3 is physical and Nintendo do their Direct.
Maybe that’s not the pattern Nintendo uses, but I’m not really expecting a Direct in June based on this information (not talking about the Partner Showcases or Minis).

E3 IS DEAD
kaydeejay1995
As expected. I’m guessing they’ll do a mini, whether a partner showcase or not, in the 2nd half of June like last year, then a full direct in September like usual. Although if it’s true they don’t have many more big titles coming for the switch due to the imminent arrival of it’s successor, we might just get another mini in September, if anything at all. Either way, there’s already lots to look forward to this year and I’m sure there’ll be some stuff announced on Pokemon day for later this year too.

This would’ve been very sad news a few years ago, and caused all sorts of drama. Now we all pretty much shrugged when we heard this. Funny how times change.

So I guess no new Nintendo Direct until September?
I’m having a brain fart and can’t remember if they had a Direct in June last year.

With their latest Nintendo direct blowing both Sony’s State of Play and Microsoft’s Developer Direct out of the water in terms of just youtube viewership, Nintendo doesn’t need E3 filtered through the gaming media to show off games.
For the business side, they could just do zoom meetings and face to face 1 on 1 meetings like everyone else.
As an anecdote, major automakers also skipped a major autoshow in Toronto this year. I think live in person conventions are falling out of style for big corporations. The business deals that used to happen there can be done remote, and the consumer/advertisement angle is diminished as well.
jupiterparlance
I wouldn’t say they’re *missing* it, Bob.
MarcsterS
The Big Three are ofccially out of E3. what a damn shame. Seems like the end of an era. Granted, E3 messed up pretty bad back in the day before this, but it’s just been a slow decline after Nintendo showed you don’t need Conferences.
IDontCheckMyMail
“Missing” or “skipping”? There’s a huge difference.
jonerthan
At this point it’s only newsworthy if someone confirms they ARE going to E3
GiaoPlays
As long as we have a direct during that time it honestly doesn’t make any difference
cats4life
In other news, E3 has been found dead in a ditch.
hokagenaruto
gonna miss e3 when it eventually goes away

Nintendo hears you, E3, but Nintendo don’t care

E3 still a thing?

I remember the best week of summer was always watching E3 on G4.

With Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo all ducking out I guess now it’s just E 2023.

E3 is kinda dead now. It’s easy for each major studio to do their own broadcast on a streaming site.

Nintendo, let’s retrace your steps. Where’s the last place you remember having it?
