I’ll be playing for the first time but I hear this is a terrible port. Dang was hoping for the best

While it’s not what I was personally hoping for, I’m still having fun with it.

Back when i played the original version on gamecube, i didn’t knew what fps was, but i still noticed that beautiful bump of beautifulness when a combat started
All that to say there is no way i play an inferior versus on a superior hardware

Tales of Symphonia: RePorted with bare minimum effort.
I loved this game, I would have loved to play a more definitive version, but apparently I played it already.

I really want to finally play this, but between hearing how meh of a port it is and how many other games are out this month, it will be sitting on my wishlist for a while.

Damm this looks dated. This is a port to be clear, absolutely nothing is upscaled or improved besides the resolution- and its sloppily done.
If you have no other way to play this- Gamecube, PS3, Steam, go ahead and buy it- but wait for a used copy.
Otherwise hard skip. This is coming from
Someone who has played this through easily a dozen times. I love this game and a full remake was desperately needed.

You can get a used Wii for roughly the same price and play the superior Gamecube version instead.
No idea why anybody would buy this.

I regret preordering this. I guess lesson learned.

So there’s a lot of complaints about how not enough was done to make this a full remake. I get that. But if I remember right, the game itself is in a really weird spot for a couple reasons and wasn’t just intentionally a half baked remaster. It’s way more complicated than it looks.
So the game was 60 fps on the gamecube and only on that system. When the game got ported to the ps2 it couldn’t handle the 60fps so it got cut to 30 and got a few bugs along the way. Now and important thing to pay attention to is that at some point **The 60fps GCN code was lost**. If it was physically, or there’s no longer something to read it is irrelevant but it’s lost all the same.
So when it got ported to the ps3, it used the 30fps code. Then it went to PC, then to Ps4, now the switch and this was all done using that original ps2 code with a fresh coat of paint on it. Bugs and all. Now I bet you’re wondering why they couldn’t just upgrade it, right? Well that problem is because tick rate and overall speed of the game is directly tied to the fps. If you’ve played the original GCN version you’ll be aware of the differences but it was also made to work with it. Just flipping a 60fps switch without changing the foundation of the port code would be setting the 30fps base game to run at 2x speed. Not exactly ideal.

There’s been efforts in the pc modding scene to try and “fix” it but they’ve only managed to hit around the 40’s and the mod team felt that’s really all they’re capable of. It really sounds like in order to get it close to the original version they would need make a whole new copy of the game. I just don’t feel that’s ever going to happen so maybe emulating it would work but play it on the gamecube if you can. It’s a great game that I do feel people should check out, it’s just got technical limitations due to an old mistake.
