Shows no score and 1 review when I go to rotten tomatoes.
I mean, it’s Illumination, when you watch a movie made by them, you don’t exactly expect any level of quality.
When I said 50% or less and my gut said 35% a few weeks back, people downvoted it and questioned it.
Well that’s a bummer
I’m honestly surprised. Looks like most of the negative reviews criticize the movie having little in the way of character depth or development.
This is really surprising since the opinions from the premiere were **very** positive, some even calling it a Masterpiece (Kit & Krysta, Good Vibes Gaming, and many others). I wonder what happened?
RT as of right now has it at 55% with 71 reviews. More reviews are coming in, but I expect it to be within the 48%-65% range when they’re all in. It’ll likely be kinda average (sounds like slightly below average) from a critical standpoint, but I think it’ll do pretty well financially.
Edit: The website is acting kinda wonky. When I refreshed the page, it dropped down to 46% with 52 reviews (lower than what the tweet said) while the movies in the “in theaters” section shows it at a 54%. It’ll likely settle down a bit after a couple of hours.
Edit #2: 56% after 81 reviews.
Edit #3: 54% after 92 reviews. I think mid 50s will be where it stabilizes at this point.
I will never understand why people put so much weight on Rotten Tomatoes scores. It’s just review aggregation. It simply just tells you how many people gave it a positive review and how many gave it a negative review (and meh usually gets treated as negative). It doesn’t tell you what specific aspects people liked or disliked. It doesn’t tell you how much they liked or disliked it. It’s also not reflective of what general audiences think about it. It’s better to actually read the reviews being aggregated (both positive and negative) and come to your own conclusion. Better yet, watch it yourself and make up your opinion.
Anyway, from what I read of the reviews used by RT, the negative ones don’t seem to hate it. They just think it’s thin, uninspired and lacks plot and character development which some of the positive reviews agree with. The positive reviews seem to have enjoyed the visuals, jokes and respect for the source material.
I can already sense the Arlo video.. Miyamoto loves stories.
So one critic that went in not knowing anything about Mario I follow had some interesting points that usually applies to movies but not Mario.
They had issue because there’s no explaination to how the stuff in the Mushroom kingdom worked? Odd but I see how usually that’s what you expect when you’re introduced to a new world in movies.
Another thing they brought out was that Mario didn’t have the typical “struggle phase” of a character arc, like there’s a learning curve but there’s usually a hickup afterwards that’s missing.
And last the issue was Bowser’s overreaction to wanting to destroy the whole kingdom if he didn’t get what he wanted.
They didn’t buy the Mario and Luigi relationship and though it was a bad copy of Anna and Elsa for some reason.
Don’t know, all the other critics I follow knew Mario and they didn’t have the same issues. Their issue was that it went a bit too fast and the story is on the simple/thin side.
in that case, i guess i will wait for the day 1 patch and DLC to come before i watch it completely
Probably a case of movie “made for the fans” scenario
It seems like they could have taken influence from the Mario RPGs to help with the story, there is definitely more than enough in those games to create a good 90 minute movie. I am still hoping that I love the movie.
This is going to be a movie where the critic score is 50 and audience score is 80-90.
I don’t follow critics anymore. They’ve been telling us to see bad Marvel movies for years. 😂
Sounds like visuals and easter eggs are on point, hence the trailers being so appealing, but the actual plot, writing and jokes are a let-down.
Audience score is all that matters to me on this kind of movie.
I just need it to be good enough to get a Zelda movie greenlit. Then we can worry about how much depth the story has.
Some of the criticisms are valid, but some are also kinda asinine. Saying the live action movie is better is super contrarian take.
It’s 52 on Metacritic, which is a bit better. But yeah, I don’t think too many people expected this movie to “wow” critics. It’s clearly something that kids and older fans of the Mario games will enjoy and that’s ok. Not every movie has to be an Oscar nominee to be enjoyable.
I’m amazed more people didn’t see this coming. You can still love the movie though. It really doesn’t matter. I love the original super Mario brother movie and that’s considered a flop.
its getting up tough.
LMAO so much coping here
Heres another critics hate viewers love movie, this is Godzilla King of The Monsters and every Pokémon movie ever all over again
I’m kind of disappointed by this but I think it’ll still be fun for fans
I thought it looked like they were trying to pack too much into one movie. We have tradional mario aspects, Mario kart, donkey kong, and potentially some Luigis mansion. That’s too much
no no no no wait wait wait, WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT
Video games can get away with minimalistic stories because you can have great gameplay as a replacement, but movies? You need a good story, or at least have it be compelling in some way because what else are you left with?
This is one movie where I don’t really care about the opinions of film critics. I never expected this to be some amazing masterpiece of film-making, but some lighthearted entertainment with tons of fan-service and easter eggs. If it delivers on that, I’m perfectly happy.
Because people are expecting this movie to be something it was never supposed to be. It isn’t going to have a deep plot with satisfying character development. I don’t care about that in this movie. At all. I’m not going in expecting a beautifully written emotional roller coaster.
Regardless of what people think RT’s site is broke ATM. There are quite a few high scores being counted as “rotten”. One example, a reviewer gave it 4.5/5 and it’s got the red tomato of death next to it.
Gonna be interesting to watch this for myself
I’m not surprised. A franchise where plot has been intentionally simplistic and character development purposely avoided is a compromised concept for a movie to begin with.
Zelda lends itself better to movies. Sonic has a plot and character base for movies. Mario…I just never thought it’d be a great concept and was more of a money grab.
Eh, I’ll probably like it.
It’s up to 54% now
I figured it was going to be a very middling movie.
As soon as I saw the racing karts and Rainbow Road I knew they were trying to cram everything into this movie and I was immediately proved right when I saw a Luma.
Just remember, they gave cuties an 88. I don’t trust these mfs, they hate popular stuff.
It’s an illumination studios movie with Chris Pratt as Mario, is anyone actually surprised
My quick review.
I enjoyed the movie and the nostalgia/fan service. The thing that disappointed me was that in certain segments of the movie the plot felt rushed/forced and thus created a somewhat disjointed progression of the story.
One of the examples is, and this is spoiler-free: Mario makes his way to Peach’s castle (as observed in trailers), but the character interaction between Peach/Mario feels rushed/unnatural and then fairly quickly the story is pushed towards the next chapter.
It’s like they tried to cram lots of nostalgia at the expense of the story progression being more fluid, meaningful and coherent. They could have added another 20-30min to delve bit deeper into each segment.
Overall it was enjoyable, fun and the cool bit was saying with your kids ‘oh this is from this game or that game’.
3 1/2 out of 5
To be honest I’ve watched movies that rotten tomatoes ranked good, and they were horrible. I’ve also watched movies that rotten tomatoes ranked bad, and they were terrific. I wouldn’t base anything off of this mediocre rank from a mediocre ranker.
My 5-year-old is still gonna love it, and that’s all that matters to me.
I don’t trust rotten tomatoes anymore after seeing [this](https://www.metaflix.com/how-rotten-tomatoes-scores-can-be-terribly-misleading/)
It’s made by illumination it’s going to be garbage. They’ve made precisely one decent film which was their first and every one since has just been cheap lazy and awful
Just FYI, animated movies can be amazing – Pixar has made some of the most powerful and emotional movies of all time. This ain’t that. This is a popcorn movie for kids. Awesome, and I’m sure Nintendo will make a ton of money, but it is shallow.
This was always going to be all style no substance. Anyone expecting otherwise is willfully ignorant.
im sure the movie is good but its typical internet: everyone who get to see it early ALWAYS says its AMAZING trying to make people jealous of not being able to see it yet. always overhyping it, I see it with games as well.
Was pretty great, 10/10 exactly what I expected and more from a Mario movie.
Loads of references and cameos
Even had >!DK Rap!< and cameos >!by Diddy Kong and Trixie!<
