I don’t think we could have honestly expected better than 8. It was always going to be an illumination studios style children’s film that was going to rely heavily on references for its gags.
Which is fine.

Was expecting a 7 tbh so this is a welcome surprise
Gigliovaljr
A welcome result. I was hoping it’d get somewhere between 6-8 in the reviews. This is in the higher end of my expectations.

> Moments like this – as well as the frequent use of slo-mo to highlight jokes – are a bit too cute, and hint at how easily The Super Mario Bros. Movie could’ve slipped into “generic animated movie” territory had it given way to more of these low-hanging stabs at making sure Uncle Jack has his “I understood that reference!” moment, too.
Figured the Illumintion funk would still follow through even with Nintendo’s supervision. All in all I’d rather have the movie make actual uses of thier references, unlike the live action movie.
Sentinel10
Just about everything lines up with my expectations. A fun light hearted adventure that invests more in a whimsical world rather than a heavy narrative, and I’m okay with that. It’s clearly going to be a movie for kids and Mario/Nintendo fans first.
The praise for the voice acting and music makes me even more excited.

If you have high hopes for this movie, this is the only review you need to see. Just don’t look at the Metacritic or RT scores. Don’t do it lol

It’s basically what I thought it would be. They also make a point to state the voice actors aren’t as bad as the internet says.
They give it marks off for some issues with the story and putting in pop music where it shouldn’t be.
Regardless of how i feel after seeing it, my Mario obsessed 3 year old will absolutely love it, so it’s a win win either way for me
Kidspud
Not a great sign, IMO, if it only got an 8 on IGN. They tend to be very, very generous with grades.

I’ve heard the story and characters are really shallow, which I’d expect from Illumination, but I also wonder how much Miyamoto influenced that? Considering he thought Galaxy’s pretty thin story was too much, I think character arcs of any kind are out of the picture.

Comparing the Super Mario Bros. Movie reviews to the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie…
IGN: Mario – 8/10, Sonic – 7/10
Rotten Tomatoes: Mario – 53%, Sonic – 64%
Metacritic: Mario – 48, Sonic – 47
I would honestly say that averaging those three reviewers out, they’re relatively reviewed the same. I *loved* Sonic The Hedgehog when it released, totally exceeded expectations and was an entertaining watch. I imagine Super Mario Bros will provide similar entertainment value.

Does anyone else think Peach looks way too far off?

I’m going to be very honest here: I enjoyed Detective Pikachu and both the Sonic films. They’re all a good time and that’s all some movies need to be. So this trending at 50 and below everywhere doesn’t concern me too much.
Uwe Boll set the bar so, so low. I’m looking forward to watching this, even if it is an entirely average movie.

IGN out here being the only reliable critic for the first time in their existence. I’ll have to give them more of a chance in the future.

It’s a kids film, I’m not expecting miracles. As long as it keeps my kids attention I don’t really care if its not a masterpiece

I wonder how much nintendo and the movie studio paid IGN for this review? Doesn’t read as authentic to me at all. Any time the author veered toward negative it’s explained away. Seems like editors got involved and made the author give a positive review when they didn’t want to

Wow the IGN site is cancer

I just watched it and I absolutely loved it!
I don’t even care if I’m in the minority lol I ALSO loved the old movie ♡
