I like hearing at least one specific piece of praise for Jack Black as Bowser. He was the actor who most resembled and most attempted his character.
From what I could tell, his Bowser is the part most seem to be looking forward to seeing, and I’m glad he’s delivering.
EDIT: I’m not shitting on Pratt, yall. Nowhere in this comment was he mentioned. I think he’ll be fine. But Jack Black is one of the few mainstream actors who seems to be taking voice acting seriously and it’s nice to see.

Overwhelmingly positive, good to see

Probably worth waiting until the full review embargo is lifted in a few days to get an idea of the movie’s quality. Whenever I see social media posts before a movie is released, they skew more positive than movies tend to be.
CrazyComedyKid
i’m fully expecting this to be like the lorax, where it’s not great but the fanservice, memes, and a couple good voice actors end up saving it for casual viewers, just nothing the hardcore critics are thumping to see again.

Being disabled in bed 24×7 I’m jealous of everyone that’s able to go and see it. Makes me miss the days of Covid lockdowns when you could rent newly released movies

So basically similar reception to Sonic and Detective Pikachu. As game adaptions, they’re good. But by themselves(or you’re not a fan), not as much.
“It’s still an Illumination movie” kinda speaks for itself. Still looking forward.

So it seems that the majority of reactions are indeed positive, which is a fantastic thing to hear, but with a handful of mixed to negative ones as well, although even those just seem to say it’s just underwhelming and not a dumpsterfire. Expected.
Seems that the visuals and fanservice are praised by pretty much everyone, regardless of their overall stance on the film, with a lot of praise for the characters and music too. It’s really just the story that seems to be the issue, being rather standard, basic, shallow, and nothing super-special. Basically, a film that kids, casual audiences, and especially Mario fans will have at least a good amount of fun with, but one hardcore critics won’t be amazed by.
Wait, a visually-amazing movie with enjoyable characters, action, music, and fanservice, but a relatively bare-bones and basic plot? Man, they really *were* staying true to the source material.

Obviously gonna be mostly positive from the early fan side and critic opinion doesn’t dictate much for me personally but them highlighting Jack’s Bowser is good gives me confidence he’ll have a lot of screen presence. Nothing much on Luigi is my concern with him being portrayed as mostly the damsel-in-distress meaning he might get sidelined for a chunk of it.

Please be good

I expect it to be fine.
Really, just like the Sonic movies it has a really low bar to clear. It doesn’t have to be GOOD as much as it has to avoid being BAD.

>You’ll get a chance to make up your mind when The Super Mario Bros. Movie comes to theaters on April 4 in the US and April 7 in the rest of the world.
People thinking the US is the whole world is one thing, but now I’m not even included in “the rest of the world”?
It releases at the end of the month here.

The post mentioning to “stay for the credits” is definitely interesting. Are we actually going to get that “NCU Avenger’s post-credit scene” that everyone’s been joking about?
JJDude
Glad to see it’s mostly very positive. I don’t trust illumination since they make garbage like the Minion movies, but in Miyamoto I trust that he will protect his own IP to make sure it’s not a dumpster fire. Looking good so far. Can’t wait to take my kids to see it next week.

The original super Mario brothers movie was the best. Just a bunch of plumbers from Brooklyn.

I really want to know before I go in if there’s an after credits scene I need to stick around for.

This article had so many ads and shit popping up in it that I can’t even read it on mobile. I even turned on reader view and it still ended up being forced to reload the article.
As far as content, the writer started by throwing unnecessary shade at the the 1993 release of Super Mario Brothers, which came off as pretentious. But moreover, it was a fluffy, time-wasting tangent that is ultimately irrelevant to the discussion at hand.
I rate this article 2/5 stars. Wouldn’t bother reading it.

I just couldnt get as hyped as I should have for the Super Mario movie. Too much star power, and they seemed way too egotistical to do the characters justice. Especially Seth Rogen saying he wouldn’t bother adjusting his voice to give DK his own sound. Why hire someone to voice act of they can’t voice act? Nobody gives a shit about Seth Rogen.
At least for the Sonic movies it felt like Paramount acyed on the fans opinion on Sonic’s appearance, because they responded to that.
But then they dropped the ball like hell with the Halo tv series.

It will be good,i don’t mind Chris playing Mario but he is doing a really good job.3 days until the event!
OingoBoingo311
has anyone here seen it yet? I just want to know if Daisy is in the movie or not.

I’d like to imagine all of this hype is marketing for the next console they’re about to announce. The Holy Trinity. A theme park, a movie, a next console.
PLEASE.

Still waiting for the Pedro Pascal SNL version..
hashbrowntown86
I really think John C Reilly should’ve been Donkey Kong, since Wreck It Ralph is essentially a DK-esque character.
chugalaefoo
I don’t care if they were overwhelmingly negative.
Still taking my kids to go watch it.

The movie appears to be jam-packed with a lot of coverage of the games. So to me it’s going to be fast-paced. Mario’s going to be super understanding and just do what sounds right instantly. There’s no real character development.

Luigi is sidelined?! It better be because Luigi’s Mansion is coming soon!

Everything will be in the audience score in Rotten Tomatoes, I never trust critics.

The casting alone makes the movie cringeworthy let alone now it has a crap hollow story. They could have came up with something out of all the Mario games out there to make a decent story around.
This whole thing was nothing but a cash grab and will go down not even as a cult classic like the first one but just a horrible movie.

One negative review mentioned barebones plot. If we really wanna go that route Mario Odyssey was literally Bowser kidnaps Peach and Mario has to save her with his new hat friend. There was no Kamek, Bowser Jr, or Koopalings, or Luigi involved in that story it was literally just Bowser, Peach, and Mario but the gameplay was fantastic. Like what do people expect with a Mario movie a Batman plotline. Mario is not really a complex character to understand
