According to this report. Not sure how reliable. But the $100 million budget was reported by Variety previously.

>*Super Mario Bros*.’ wild $377 million global 5-day opening (including $204.6 million domestic), a testament to the power of his Nintendo I.P. Per sources, the game company financed half the movie’s $100 million budget and gets 50 percent of profits after Universal (and its Illumination division) recoup their costs.
So the higher the B.O numbers go, the more money Nintendo makes as after a certain threshold, and once Universal has recouped all their costs, Nintendo gets 50% of all profits.

I’ve been putting about $100 per paycheck into Nintendo (NTDOY) stocks since the WiiU days and im pretty optimistic
“get 50% of the profits after Universal and Illumination recoup costs”
Oh LOL. Hollywood accounting will show a loss.
Hollywood accounting practices are notorious for rarely reporting any profitability so I wonder how much money Nintendo will really make here. Nintendo’s businesspeople are shrewd though, so I’m sure they won’t allow much of the Hollywood tomfoolery. Their Q2 earnings call will be one to watch
Nintendo had a lot of control over the filming/all aspects the Mario movie, well from what I can find. I don’t know how accurate they are though.
I’m just here patiently waiting for The Legend of Zelda and Metroid movies that *might* follow once Nintendo sees how lucrative movies with their IP can be.
I saw the Mario movie on Thursday and thought it was fun, so I’d love to see other IPs I’m personally more invested in.
I think they made that back in the first day LOL
Makes sense. We knew Nintendo was funding the movie and were involved in the production, including having many nintendo employees including miyamoto in there as producer. so now we know they funded 50% of the movie so i guess 50 million, while universal, the distributor, did the other 50 million. 50 million is the number for a game so for sure a game wasnt done for this movie to happen lol
The propotion of profit will adjust to 7:3 for the next nintendo movie, because Nintendo can choose which studio to make the movie, and most important is it prints money
Money well spent.
I wonder if the production budget on this movie was lowered because Nintendo and Illimunation could use assets and designs already made for the games. Like they didn’t have to design and build Mario and the main characters from scratch because they already existed from the games.
I thought the budget was greater than that. My god universal just prints money with their illumination movies, the return on investment is ridiculous.
I really hope this means that Nintendo will green light more movies or TV shows for their other IPs. A Studio Ghibli animated Legend of Zelda movie NEEDS to happen!
While the movie was good, and I applaud all the work involved, I’m surprised at the $100 million budget. John Wick Chapter 4 is reportedly around $90 million.
I’d love to see a making of Mario Bros. Movie; I wish more movies would do stuff like that cause I love to see the behind the scenes stuff and what’s involved with the animation, voice acting, etc.
Gotdamn
And all this hard earned profit is going towards making another Mario Party with no content and a Metroid spin-off! 👍
What about the 50 million in marketing?
