Nothing says “New Nintendo thing released” like people saying the previous iteration was way better than the new one.

Leave it to Polygon to have the worst take in human history.

They’re completely different movies. I saw the original in theaters when it came out and, like most other young Mario fans at the time, was confused and disappointed. Over the years, it built a cult following and as an adult far removed from the early 90s, it’s a lot easier to appreciate what the movie was trying to achieve. So long as you don’t view it as “Mario,” it’s genuinely a fun B-style movie with an impressive aesthetic. I rewatched it again the night before the new movie’s release just so it would be fresh in my head before I went to the theater, and I can see why a lot of today’s critics prefer it: it was conceptually eccentric, had great cyberpunk sets, had more even pacing, a more developed (if confusing) storyline, even some political themes.

But it wasn’t really a “Mario” movie, so wasn’t good for fans, and it was thematically too disjointed for the uninterested adults who were dragged to the theater by their kids. It had no real audience in 1993, so went poorly understood and maligned by critics. It’s very funny to me that now, all of a sudden, it takes the release of the new movie for several critical reviews to start appreciating what the old one was trying to do.

But yeah, if you’re a fan of the Mario franchise and want to watch a movie actually set in its universe, the new one is unequivocally preferable. It’s basically the movie I was hoping to see when I walked into the theater back in 1993.

  4. It doesn’t matter how creative you are if your execution is absolutely awful.

Anything to be contrarian, I guess.

this is a batshit insane take that I know whoever wrote this doesn’t actually consider true

that said, having rewatched the movie a little while ago, by god there are a few areas where this movie just did better. the 2023 movie cutting luigi out of the spotlight in the first few minutes was a huge misstep, i wish we could have seen more brotherly interaction like in the old movie

I saw this movie when it came out. It was terrible then, and it’s terrible now. The Mario movie is a love letter to fans that anyone of any age can enjoy.

    What a ridiculous take.

You guys wanna hear a fun fact about the Mario Bros movie 1993? I bet you never heard of it

I saw the 93 in theatres and loved it, was always confused why people hated it. Just saw the new Mario movie last night and thought it was pretty good. I dig both of them, different takes for sure but both had really cool things about them.

Without reading the article. I kind of get what they’re trying to say. A lot of conversation right now about the movie talks about how the movie was fun but very plain. Everyone is divisive on the 1993 movie, but it can be agreed that the path it chose was very in a unique direction, and so thus, in a way better.

I don’t agree, I loved this new movie. It was a bit fast and sparced with depth, but the world felt so much bigger than they could possibly do in the 1993 movie.

there’s being a contrarian and just being flat out wrong

Hot take to get clicks… BUT I am absolutely a 1993 SMB apologist. It had such a wild aesthetic vision for it. The prison scene is absolutely bonkers and a perfect microcosm of what works in this movie.
