The fact they only spent 100M on this is nuts. Illumination does it again

Say what you wanna say about the quality of their movies, they sure know how to rack in a profit.

  3. NCU bankroll funds. Probably green light a handful already.

I hope it will become a lesson for Netflix – an adaptation should respect the source material.

If the momentum remains strong, the Mario movie may end up outperforming BOTH Sonic movies combined! (I love both Sonic movies, btw)

It’s just such an endlessly fun movie

A sequel will be coming…bet on it. I’m sure there will also be Nintendo IP’s in the future whether it be Donkey Kong, Metroid, Zelda, etc.

How much is Nintendo getting for this movie? Do they just get a percentage of the profits or did they fund the entire movie?

There’s a significant turndown in tech and media spending right now, and it’ll likely deepen. Nintendo has funds on funds. If they’re bold enough, this could become a much more significant opportunity for them and Universal.

  11. I fully understand this movie was not made for me. I’m completely ok with that. I didn’t find it groundbreaking or as fun ad others have and that’s fine because it makes me happy something that stuck to its guns about being what it is has done so well.

I will always cheer on projects that adhere to source materials as closely as possible and stick the landing. It means hopefully anyone in positions of decision making at the top will stay the fuck away and just let creaters create.

I hope this leads us to a Zelda, Metroid or Kirby movie next.

  12. It’s pretty good. As a lifelong Nintendo fan, I felt like they did the movie justice. Some references would go unnoticed by the younger crowd, but I heard a bunch of parents laughing at them.

I wasn’t a fan of Pratt doing the voice, but I feel now like it works. They play the “It’s-a me! Mario!” accent as a fake accent used to promote their plumbing company, and it’s a pretty funny bit. Jack Black just works as Bowser. Bowser singing “Peaches, Peaches, Peaches” while playing a grand piano was one of my favorite scenes of any recent movie.

Never thought I’d live in a universe where the Sonic movies AND the Mario movie are good.

The Movie Hasn’t even hit Japan yet. This movie will easily get 1B. Very happy to see.

How do the profits split? How much will Nintendo get?

    > “becomes biggest videogame adaptation ever”

Well it’s not like that was a high bar to clear.

  18. TippsAttack

Yes, Nintendo, this is us telling you we want Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, etc. movies.

How hard did the movie studio executives laugh when they read the reviewer who said this movie was worse than the 1993 one?

  20. Crackbat

How long until Nintendo buys Illumination and it becomes the Nintendo Animation Studio?

  21. 8cheerios

I enjoyed watching it, but am confused why they included at least four slow-mo shots. Why use it so many times?

  22. I just imagine all the nay sayers eating that humble pie, leaving me with the biggest shit eating grin after reading this.

I guess it’s obvious that this would happen but can’t forget that pokemon is a thing

  24. Sandwichgode

Well, the era of good video game movies has begun. There’s no way nintendo doesn’t greenlight movies for the rest of their IPs. I would be thrilled to see a Zelda movie and Metroid movie.

Now do metal gear solid universe

I’m calling it now: video game adaptations will be the new superhero movies.

Pretty clear based on recent box office returns that the Marvel/DC superhero genre is waning in popularity, so studios are desperate to find a new cow to milk. Between Mario and “The Last of Us,” I think they’ve found it.
