At this point if you’re in the Nintendo modding business and are advertising that fact all over the internet, you are just asking for their lawyers to come knocking. The simple reason this has only happened now is because Tears of the Kingdom is a month away and they are protecting their revenue against what they see as competing products.

I love Nintendo games just as much as the next person, but whoever defends Nintendo in this situation, just know that they don’t care about you. Content creators don’t either, but at least they’re more on our level and enjoy the fact that they entertain us. Nintendo isn’t on our side. That being said, Nintendo isn’t going after just the modding community. They are going after anyone who’s putting out content of their games. They are breaking fair use laws and their own policies. Don’t defend Nintendo like a little fan boy, it’s just making you look bad.

>Cracks Down on YouTube Content
>Only seems to be targeting people using Mods that are being run via unofficial emulation in CEMU or Yuzu, especially those for Botw. Also hasn’t taken the mod itself down like other companies like 2K have
I’m just gonna be that guy and say it, as much as I’m sympathetic to people being scared about their financial future and think Nintendo shouldn’t have flagged their genuine unmodded content and need to update their TOS to be more clear about what they do and don’t want fans to be doing, they built their careers off blatantly doing a thing that ticks Nintendo off (even if Emulation and modding is legal) and they have kicked people from their own content creator programs for. What did they expect was gonna happen??? You built yourself on a foundation of sand and are now mad the house is falling over.
Also not a fan of the entitlement and ownership PointCrow specifically has on the Zelda Community. This series exists and thrives in spite of mods because of the lore and great level design and mechanics built across 30 years and 15+ games, not because of a bunch of people doing memey challenge vids. They don’t like this stuff regularly, and you are doing it while they are advertising the direct sequel to Botw, one of if not THE biggest releases of the year. Maybe don’t do the thing that confuses the marketing right now, maybe just get ready to make TotK content if you still care.

For the people defied g them know that videos that are not modded are being taken down as well, and most moddded videos usually survive anyway, it’s just specifically botw’s that are problematic currently

Let’s be honest. Let’s say you you developed an awesome video game. You worked many long hours, weeks & months on it to get it just right. You paid developers & your team to help you get it just right. All with the sole purpose of making money. Then right before you decide to release it or even after it’s released, someone decides to hack or mod “your” game. Honestly…. you’d be pissed. You’d view it as losing sales & money because people are playing the mod instead of buying & playing your game. You’d feel cheated because someone took your hard work & turned it into something else. Some things don’t seem unfair…until it happens to you. With all that said, it seems like Nintendo would find a way to get involved in this. They know people will always be doing this. It’s like the old adige “if you can’t beat em, join em.” They could make even more money off their games. But I do see Nintendo’s point of view.

If you are “Modding” a Nintendo IP, odds are something illegal is going on. Then if you monetize videos which contain modded nintendo IP, you are profiting off of doing something illegal
CrocomireRex
Of course this article is from Kotaku. The same idiots that publicly called for people to pirate Metroid Dread a week before it came out. If you read this trash, you are part of the problem.
allpetitecirclejerk
you just know kotaku will be one of the first ones to cover internet drama like this one

Nintendos protective values around its IP have been challenged so many times in the past it’s like it’s still acting out of some kind of PTSD spilling over to miss trust of their raving fans. Back in earlier days they had real cause for concern around piracy particularly. All my Gameboy games were copies, SNES and N64 copies were available in the classifieds of the paper too. I remember this one especially: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1995-01-19-fi-21867-story.html

Those who make games should be about as concerned about how people use their games as those that make soccer balls. It’s a toy, people play with it how they want.
Every_Fox3461
You can play thier games and have a canned. Just don’t be showing off mods..😅 It hurts thier official image.
Clilly1
This is why Nintendo is this way. Please stop with the “streamers are helping” nonsense.
Your right. It’s always happened in some way shape or form, but not to the extent of today’s technology. Because it didn’t happen on a mass scale back then is what allowed Nintendo to succeed. That’s why they are who they are today producing all the games we love.

Nintendo will fucking execute you if you have a png of Mario on your website at this point, fucking hell.

The fact there is different people there now is irrelevant. Nintendo wouldn’t have to pay huge amounts of money to their lawyers if they didn’t have to defend what’s already theirs from people using & changing their licensed games & products.

Don’t mind me just reading the comments, fun times

This thread shows just how out of touch nintendo fans are about modding and piracy
Flagrath
It means that you don’t specifically ask for your vids to be taken down, like these people were.
dekuweku
The more appropriate title would be modders of BoTW content. Not surprised its Kotaku with the coverage.
I don’t agree with Nintendo’s copyright policy here, but I can see why they are doing it.
Riomegon
I used to make videos about Nintendo, then after a few strikes.. I said I won’t be making any more videos about Nintendo.
This is just the law of the land on Youtube, deal with it and adapt. Or cry to your viewers to support your patreon, your choice.
MiZe97
I hate that they went after PointCrow, but let’s not blow this out of proportion. There’s been an active modding community for Mario Odyssey and Smash Ultimate for years and Nintendo has left them alone. This is them going after a part of the Zelda modding community near the sequel of the game they’re modding.
ParishSociety
I know how this stuff works. I’ve been involved with it my entire working career. The fact you would say this to me tells me your knowledge base on the subject, so when you can acknowledge what the true definition of “Modding” is & in what ways it affects the original product…feel free to message me.

Nintendo doing Nintendo things, nothing new here. I might love Nintendo games but as a company they’re awful.
OoTgoated
That’s so lame. I get that Nintendo needs to protect their IPs but this is just ridiculous.

I watched the guys video and when he mentioned that they also took down a challenge video it reminded me of that little episode in the Pokemon community when Kit & Krysta mentioned how they weren’t allowed to do a nuzlocke video for Nintendo Minute because they considered it “to be on the same level as using a hacked game”.
They released statements to places like Eurogamer saying that they don’t mind if people do nuzlocke, but clearly internally someone still does and/or is out of touch and doesn’t understand the concept of self imposed challenges.

I don’t care about content creators, I care about the games. It’s a cruel world out there, choose your hobbies wisely.

Companies with copyright holdings have to protect their trademarks lest they lose it.
Now, when it comes to modding, emulating and more, the legality of it can get a bit murky. These people (myself included) are finding new ways to play these games and enhance their experience and enjoyment from them.
Historically, Nintendo has been notorious when it comes to takedowns, DMCA and others. But they fail to understand that continuously doing this further alienates them from their fanbase.
Nintendo is known for releasing games and completely forgetting about them until it comes time to re-release it on a different platform at the **same price** years later. Or removing content from content-creators who keep the games alive…
The heads of Nintendo (and the ones mostly making these kind of decisions) are completely out-of-touch business men who see only money. And if they find something where they could potentially lose that money, they feel the need to take action.
I love Nintendo’s products, but they need a reality check; get a grip and get with the times.
witwebolte41
In the end it’s Nintendo’s product and they can do what they want with it.

Aren’t they just playing Nintendo games?
That’s a weird definition of creator.

Typical Kotaku, am I right?
By the way, I like mods.

Nintendo being anti-consumer again, who would have thought.

If you like Nintendo at all, I strongly urge you to avoid /r/PCgaming for a bit..😐
Kxr1der
maybe its just me… but why should I care at all about this? Sucks for this guys business but that’s the risk you take streaming Nintendo games.
Don’t think it’s fair? Get a job you’re actually in control of.
MrMindGame
I mean, while I think Nintendo is overly aggressive about how they handle YouTube content generally, in this case the dude is playing a cracked and modded version of their game that doesn’t exist and sharing it with the public, which is technically illegal. I kinda feel like Nintendo is in their right to do this in this case.
Gamergirl944
This totally sucks 😕

Excellent news. Nintendo has every right to protect their intellectual property. Well done Nintendo! Keep up the good work!

Everyone knows Nintendo takes content that involves mods of their games. Pointcrowe whining about it is so stupid. Like, did he think he was special and an exception to the rule? He literally did a thing he knew would get taken down, and then cried about it getting taken down. Stupidest internet drama ever.
