Audiences typically don’t care about that, nor does every movie need to try to “do something” for the medium. People found it entertaining. I don’t think we have to compare it to Puss in Boots, which *was* (and still is in some circles) being raved about by fans and creatives alike during its time in theatres.

I haven’t seen the second *Puss in Boots* movie, but I know that *The Super Mario Bros. Movie* is substantially better at least in terms of animation.

The mario movie was really more of a jump for video game movies rather than a move for animation. Just remember the 93′ movie became the mess it is known for because no one took video games seriously. Its still not easy to make a good video game movie, especially when you consider movies only give about half of the experience you get with games. Video games have also barely left the stigma of being considered mindless bottom of the barrel content, and are still being questioned if they are truely art or not, this is still a challenged ghetto. This issue has only improved because most adults nowadays were the kids growing up with the era of gaming

It was more protecting it from smarmy film critics. It’s not a film critics kids film, it’s a Mario fan’s film, which is fine and safe when they’re testing the waters, but yeah, it’s not particularly good.
