  1. Their other works include Yoshi’s New Island and Hey! Pikmin. So, uh, not a great track record.

  2. Arzest also made Yoshi’s New Island, Mario and Sonic at the Rio Olympics for 3DS (not Wii U) and Hey! Pikmin. In case anyone’s wondering if “Balan Wonderland co-developer” is an unfair description.

This would normally be worrying but impressions from media are very positive. Controls very well and level design is quite dense and full of branching paths. It seems like a lot more went wrong with Balan than the dev team being bad, particularly that Square Enix gave up on it and kicked out Yuji Naka before it was finished.

Normally this would be a telltale sign of this game being not great (and some of the animations are indeed a bit rough), but all the people who’ve played it at the show seem to agree it’s pretty solid all-around. Perhaps Arzest is entering a redemption arc?

    God damn it

I can’t expect anything more than mediocre now…

If they’re able to make something amazing (from impressions so far have been very positive) and it’s because Naka isn’t there is going to be hilarious

Wow the makers of Yoshi’s New Island are developing this game. This will honestly be interesting.

Someone should be fired for letting these people anywhere near a 2d Sonic. Just give it to the Sonic Mania guys problem solved.

Everyone has to try to find something bad about this game to talk about huh? What a clickbait title! Im not gonna judge Superstars based on their past games, as this game is clearly looking more solid than any of their previous titles.

From what I’ve read, the current playable demo has placeholder music from Sonic 4 Episode 2, and that more recent builds sound like Sonic Mania. Really hoping that’s the case.

Wait till they hear sonic was created by a Balan Wonderwold dev.

    NOOOOO—!!!

(falls into a spiral of despair)

And thus, the Sonic cycle began anew. Sonic Mania was all for naught.

I thought it’s made by sonic team…I don’t get it

Whatever happened to the sonic mania folks?

  15. now we know for (almost) sure this game is gonna be trash

Who is this game supposed to appeal to?

Sonic Mania only appealed to “classic” older fans because of the pixel art and “heavy” momentum based physics.

This looks too much like a generic ioS mobile game, and the gameplay video confirms we’re getting more “floaty” Sonic 4 physics which feels terrible to play.

Sonic is supposed to feel like a weighty pinball with momentum that takes precision to build speed. Sonic is NOT meant to be able to accelerate up walls, and be boosted to max speed every 5 seconds by dash pads for scripted “speed” scenes.

Sonic Team as usual have learnt no lessons and completely failed to understand why Mania sold so well in the first place.

    Looks like another flop.

Not a good sign especially with all the other games the director has made. Eh, I’ll buy it if reviews are glowing.

Never heard of this before but this looks great. Most anticipated Sonic game in god knows how long!!

  19. Yeah, that sounds about right for a Sonic game. (Mania excluded)

  20. linkenski

The game looks very good, so I’m not gonna condemn it because their previous games were mediocre. None of those games looked particularly great in their lead-ups but I like what we’re seeing of Superstars so far.

  21. Avelion2

From the ten minute game play I’ve seen it looked really good.
