Wow… I tried the Backbone thing cuz I got it for a decent price but hated how it was situated with the iPhone 14 Pro. The “adapter” was bogus and the whole thing felt like it wasn’t worth it. But I had a grand few minutes of playing Star Wars on my phone.
So when this was announced pretty much immediately after I returned the Backbone, I was actually intrigued. It’s not like the Switch, though. A dedicated streaming device for PS Remote Play is essentially just a convenience feature. For the $80 I initially paid for Backbone, it was a cool idea. For the full $100 it’s a bit worse.
…For $200 I’m blown away with disappointment. Would the system still need to be on the whole time? And regular streaming with PS+ Premium isn’t supported? What were they thinking? Could have a brand new Switch Lite for the same price.
So the question is a bit backwards. This was supposed to be competing with the idea of portable console gaming introduced by the Switch. And it looks like Sony is failing to deliver. All this accomplishes is bringing your controller into the next room and charging you $200 for it while restricting what you can stream.

I honestly think the switch is superior because it doesn’t require internet to function

You obviously have no idea what this even is. It doesn’t play games locally. It’s basically just a Wii U GamePad

Nintendo can safely ignore this thing, as it’s not offering anything they aren’t or even competing with the Switch, as has been pointed out repeatedly.

It’s a streaming device
Am I the only one who believes $200 is excessive?
It costs $200, has no native games, and is unappealing.
…Why?
Sony, why is this even a thing? *What industry does it cater to?What does it achieve that a straightforward new PSP *wouldn’t*?
Please say no! I would adore to know.
The phrase “Sony releases new useless piece of shit that doesn’t fucking work” brings to mind the famous Onion video.
Lol
Why couldn’t this device stream PS Plus games and your PS5 to any location where you had a strong WiFi connection? Such a wasted chance.
“Sony to release device to compete with smartphone function they invented in 2014” ftfy
By similar specs… do you mean a hollow husk with no internals to actually run any games?
Sure Nintendo can do that… but why would they?
They already beat this thing in 2012 with the Wii U. Less range but better games.
I thought the design was absurd; they essentially cut a PS5 controller in half.
Is even remote play trustworthy? I thought it needed a flawless Internet connection to function properly.
The “Remote Play Dedicated Device”
Essentially, then, a Wii U pad? Gosh, lol
It was $50 less expensive than I had anticipated.
Keep in mind, it isn’t like the Switch, it is like a Wii U GamePad
It appears that UrAvgConsumer has a YouTube video about it.
