Makes sense since they are preparing to release switch 2.
MonochromeTyrant
The auto-translation leaves room for misinterpretation here, but it sounds like they have no plans for sequels or future games in the BotW setting. DLC doesn’t seem to be mentioned here based on the context of the answer.
benherebefore2
A little disappointing purely because I wanted a master mode just as an excuse to start over again but honestly this is perfectly fine. The game is already so massive that I didn’t even really expect any kind of dlc in terms of new content/expansions, just the aforementioned master mode/hard mode but again this is perfectly fine.
greyleafstudio
Noooow I get why they called it “tears of the kingdom“
FarmerNo1159
— I see. Now I would like to ask you about the next production, which I am anxious to hear about: ……. Is it a further sequel, a new stage, or many other possibilities.
FujibayashiI:don’t know if it will be the next production or not, but I am thinking about what the “next fun experience” will be. I can only say that I don’t know what form that will take at this point.
Aonuma:This time we do not plan to release any additional content because we feel that we have exhausted the possibilities of creating fun in that world. The reason why we decided to make this a sequel to the previous game was because we felt that there was value in experiencing a new type of play in that Hyrule setting. Then, if those reasons are renewed, we may go back to the same world. Whether it is a sequel or a new work, I think it will be a whole new play, and I hope you will look forward to it.

I’m chill with it. I just have no idea how they’re gonna top these games and this story. It was just too good. Like, I would be happy if I never got another Zelda game because the story was THAT good imo.
Conscious-Carob-811
anyone think it could maybe be a Horizon:Burning Shores DLC situation where they might reveal a surprise DLC but make it Switch 2 exclusive?
Toricitycondor
Nothing about DLC in it at all.
They are talking about the eventful next game in the series and if it would be another sequel or a new world and they both basically said it’ll most likely be new but if a good reason comes along for them to return to this version of hyrule, they could.
DLC is almost a given for this game.

This is my opinion, and I’m entitled to it. I have found myself extremely disappointed with the story for this game. After 3 playthroughs for this sequel, I found myself feeling that Ganondorf, compared to his numerous appearances in the series, was deduced to being a generic/cliche of anime villain. Yes, Japan is where this game is made, and anime is apart of their culture. It disappoints me however to dumb down such an iconic villain for this sequel, whom I expected to be far more manipulative and cunning towards this sequel, especially if we compare to Gannondorf of TOTK, to Twilight Princess Ganondorf, who was a true orchestrator of plot by using Zant to his will to take the Twilight Realm, and Hyrule Kingdom. Wind Waker Ganondorf is also another underrated example of how he was far more intellectual, and emotional at the same time. I can never forget his dialogue from the end of the game between he and the two children chosen by fate. Of course there is also Ocarina of Time Ganondorf, and that speaks for itself. I am hoping this franchise can continue down the path of fantasy, than turning to more generic anime.

Right so I’ve given the Japanese version a read and thought I could shed some light on the subject…
The Q&A in question is the following (when discussing the series’ timeline):
>Fujibayashi
I don’t know how the next product will be, but we’re always considering what the “next fun experience” could be. As for what form that could take, all I can say at this time is “I don’t know”.

This time, we don’t have any plans to sell additional content, but that’s because we feel that we’ve made everything we could in that world. From the beginning the reason we made a sequel this time, with new things to do, was because we thought there would still be value in experiences that take place in that version of Hyrule. To which I mean, we could well return to that world provided there were another, new reason to do so. Whether that’s as a sequel or a new game, I think it would be a totally new experience, so I’d like it if people were look forward to that.
To me, two points sound pretty clear.
1. There are no plans for DLC at this time. The word he uses, 追加コンテンツ directly translates to “additional content”, but is very commonly used in Japan to refer to DLC, so this one is open-and-shut in my opinion.
2. Right now there are no plans to return to this version of Hyrule. However, he’s not ruling it out – if there were new gameplay experiences to make or some other good reason to be in this world specifically, some reason which would only make sense for this Hyrule, then they could make a new game there – though it may not be directly related to either BotW of TotK.
I hope that clears things up for people! I wouldn’t say it rules out DLC entirely – money is always a factor – but if there will be then it’s certainly not in development or planning at the moment, so expect it to be well into the future. A major DLC expansion seems unlikely to me.

Just copying and pasting my comment from r/games here.
That’s great to hear and fairly refreshing in Nintendo’s generation of “free updates” and DLC for everything. Nice to just have a finished game at release.
LunaticJ
I just wanna have both max hearts and stamina for once mannnnnnnn
boardgamejoe
I think both games are great, that being said, I hope the next Zelda is a return to linear gameplay with classic dungeons.
WEEGEMAN
That sort of makes me happy
HelloNevvanna73
I’m cool with this. Let them focus on making something entirely new for the next game. We’ve had the same Hyrule for two games now so I can understand why the devs want to make an entirely new world. So I’m cool with waiting and there’s so much to play that I’m not bothered by this decision. I also hope it’s significantly more linear.
HaloKook
The game is so big as is. I don’t really see the need for dlc
Enraric
Ah, that’s too bad. TotK would have really benefited from something like Trial of the Sword, where you can’t just eat a dozen apples whenever you get hurt or pull a hoverbike out of your pocket. Both BotW and TotK are at their best when you’re improvising with limited resources. The combat trial shrines in TotK provided a little bit of that, but I feel like the game could’ve used more.
redchris18
To be expected. TotK seems very much like them adding everything they wanted to add to BotW, so it makes sense that they didn’t feel there was anything significant to add.
LittleSomethingExtra
I don’t see a need for DLC in TotK with just how much is there already, but I will be bummed if this means we don’t get Master Mode for this game. It would be a great excuse for me to give it another playthrough down the line. We did get more difficulty modes for Metroid Dread as a free update eventually though, so maybe something similar happens here? I’m not holding my breath, but it would be nice.
rigatonesoprano
I mean. TotK was already DLC.
hinez57
Does this mean we won’t get an even number of hearts? I figured this what they were going to add with dlc at some point
Hairy_Total_2714
Now make a wind waker styled game in large scale as totk.
B-R-A-I-N-S-T-O-R-M
They are probably just jumping straight into the next console. I’d prefer that to DLC anyway, I don’t think the BotW DLC was all that great other than the new boss to fight was cool.
staveware
Outside of DLC conversation there are a lot of other cool things in the article like the development of the depths and why they kept it hidden. Worth a read.
Fearless_Freya
Sounds great tbh. Botw dlc was major letdown
szalinskikid
In all honesty, I’m more than ready to leave this version of Zelda and Hyrule behind. It’s been almost a decade since BotW was revealed (2014 I think) and it’s time for Zelda to be truly new again, with an unexplored realm, design choices, themes and music.
I can imagine them releasing a “deluxe” version on the next console, though. And maybe implement one or two new extras that constitute as DLC while they’re at it.
Blaftoif
How am I supposed to replay the game without Master Mode 🙁
BratmanDu
That’s grand I’m only just nearly finished mapping the entire depths
crazyrebel123
I’m cool with this. I hate knowing I paid full price for a game that has more content coming that I have to pay more for.
I’d rather they move on and focus on the next game if there is one
Zendomuzik
Again. They can make a better game by listening to the people. Enemies are too easy. Autobuild needs improving. We need more autobuild favorites. We need a game like the old double dragon for snes where you can play the quest but also be a fighting game where you can fight all the monsters marvel vs. capcom style. We need monsters that don’t break Zonai but instead are so tuff we have to think smart. We need EPIC battles. Monster forces was a complete joke. Pirates and pirate ships a complete joke. Is it so hard to dress a boko like a pirate with pirate weapons…? No. Nintendo is just being lazy. NINTENDO DO NOT LET THE GLITCHERS AND SPEEDRUNNERS GET TO YOU. Instead improve your game. Like why can’t I be on a wolf like Midna and fight a Lynel. They can make a better game they’re just being whack. I refuse to believe that they actually feel like they can’t do better. Trust me there’s a better game than Totk to be made. Make the boss monsters as difficult as an armoured core robot. Accept this challenge!
SBFwotaei
Thanks for the translation!

Let’s focus on another remaster instead
morphic-monkey
I don’t mind this. TOTK is such a massive game, I think if you do even *most* of the activities you’ll easily spend 100+ hours on it. Personally, I’d rather the team start designing and building the next big Zelda, which is sure to debut on the Super Switch anyway.
WaterBottleGuy94
I think it’s honestly best to just spend time early on to go ahead and make the next Zelda game compared to spending the time to make dlc rn. We’ll have the next game earlier
Kashmyta
I’d be extremely surprised if Nintendo didn’t release DLC for TOTK.
MrMunday
Nintendo: no DLCs
Other Game Companies: double the amount of time of the zonai wing for just $9.99!!
