Virtual Boy 2: Personal This Time

Yeah, I’m sure they have SOMETHING VR-like in the works. Wouldn’t be the first time. The question is whether or not it’ll make it out of development. That part i kinda doubt. Non-news until they announce something.
Justlilhippo
There is nothing Meta or anyone else could do to stop them from dominating the market if they release something with strong AR capabilities and a Pokemon Go-style game to go with it.
I believe that many people who have no interest in owning a VR headset would buy one right away just for that reason.
antoni_o_newman
I really hope this is true. Pikmin VR and Metroid VR are dream games for me.
Flasktrattt
One of the few businesses that has the power to stir the masses and popularize an entirely new medium is Nintendo. VR was tried before, but they were too advanced.
I believe they will succeed greatly if they try again. VR is prepared. Content has been one of the biggest problems with VR so far. We require more content creators. I can see it really taking off if Nintendo added their know-how, user base, and intellectual property.
PatrickZe
I really hope they don’t
Nintendomandan
I could see them making a competitor to Meta quest
MortalPhantom
Yeah but don’t expect an actual VR expect another labo thing

“In development” I can believe, because that doesn’t mean it’s anywhere near ready for market. Of course Nintendo will flirt with the ideas but they might never coalesce into a real product, beyond simple novelties like Labo.
Dairunt
If this is true then the Pimax Portal is the closest thing we have to a Switch 2.
bisforbenis
I mean, I 100% assume they have R&D projects for it, it’s a big enough of a thing that it makes sense to be experimenting around with to be looking for something that they feel works, we’ve even heard as much that they’ve done R&D for it in the past and didn’t come up with anything they wanted to move forward on, but as technology advances, it makes sense that they’ll continue to keep an eye on it for continued experimentation. That doesn’t mean it’s going to happen at all, let alone happen soon, but I’m sure they’re constantly considering it. So even if the leaker is legitimate and is genuinely hearing this, since we don’t know their source, it could easily be just “they’re playing around with the idea” which I’d expect whether or not I heard this. Now it’s be something else entirely if they were claiming knowledge of game development or production happening, since that’d indicate a legitimate intent by Nintendo to move forward with it
I’m not really excited about the idea of VR, I think it’s neat for some smaller more experimental games (like I thought it was great for “Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes”), but in general it’s not a concept I’m excited about personally.
Conversation_Dapper
They could do something crazy like vr with no headset like 3ds had no glasses, it’s possible, I’ve stated they would do something like this . And would be called Nintendo V-Room
skyHIGH-1
I have not been sold on VR devices. Give me the innovation the grows in value as it ages .
TheShipEliza
It would very Nintendo to end a near decade long heater with such a terrible idea.
LastOfAutumn
So in addition to portable and docked, the “Switch 2” could have a large virtual screen via an optional VR headset. Even have VR games specifically developed for it. Pure speculation, but it does totally seem like a Nintendo move. Innovative new (or existing) peripherals to change how people interact is kind of Nintendo’s thing. If true, it’s piqued my interest.
lasershow34
I hope not. But im sure some people would love it.
valtiell
For what?
osirus35
They certainly could make a lot of fun casual / mini games for such a device.
Substantial-North136
Imagine the successor to the switch that is able to clip into a VR head set in addition to TV and handheld. Then imagine the launch game being a new VR Metroid Prime as a launch title to show case this.
SuperToxin
Nah i dont believe that. id really be surprised.
bwoah07_gp2
These rumours are really flying all over the place.
Switch 2, now this VR standalone thing…I’m losing track!

The time for VR to be in the mainstream spotlight might actually be just around the corner. We’ll see Apple and their headset debut next year and despite the insane pricing it’ll still get people talking and likely boost sales of more affordable HMDs. Like Nintendo jumping on 3D with the 3DS soon after Avatar and the wave of 3D content hitting the market, it totally makes sense for them to strike as VR becomes normalized. I know things like Mario Kart would be so immersive in VR. I know I can never go back to flat screen racers after GT7 on the Psvr2, it’s simply that good. And things don’t all have to be experienced from a first person point of view. Like a VR Mario game could still be third person only now you are in the environment with Mario looking for solutions to puzzles from inside the game. Anyone who’s played Astro Bot or Tetris Effect will tell you what a massive difference it can make to play any game from inside those worlds. VR doesn’t always have to involve us moving around and physically fighting enemies with our arms. Sure, many of those are great… Resident Evil Village is phenomenal but I could totally play an RPG like Octopath Traveller in VR relaxing on the couch with a totally immersive view of the world. Not only do you get stereoscopic 3D but you can tilt and move your head to reveal details behind structures and characters. Nintendo devs and VR would be a mighty potent mix… like a marine in an avatar body. It gives me goosebumps 😉
tinyhorsesinmytea
Their IP does lend itself well to VR. Mario Kart alone would move units. It would of course be another pillar along traditional games and knowing Nintendo they’d do something Meta, Sony, and such haven’t thought of with the tech.
Mark me down as very interested.
EarthboundMan5
I remember writing a 4chan post in like 2017 pretending to be a Switch leaker. I said Nintendo was releasing a VR version of Switch with the launch title being Punch-Out.
Thundervolt888
Nintendo pushed us towards gyro controls, the Joysticks, Dpad, and hybrid consoles it only makes sense…
Swimming-Elk6740
Doubt it. Not as their best console, for sure.
William_J_Morgan
Ya I know this just rumour, but I just though up some games that would totally work for this.
1. Pokemon Snap VR
I think on rail experience would be perfect for VR also would so cool to see pokemon world thoughthe lens of VR no pun intended.
ARMS
I really liked games and kind hope VR could give it new life.
Metroid
Probably Prime style game would would fit better in VR
Okay now last two puzzle games
Dr Mario VR
This would be the COVID edition jokes aside. If tetris can work VR why not Dr Mario.
Pushmo series
I just liked this series so maybe it could work in VR. Probably won’t happen.
Feel free to leave your thoughts & criticisms.
milkstrike
Does it or does it not contain cardboard
roanroanroan
VR is the future of gaming, we’re just still in the atari era equivalent of VR gaming so probably around 10-20 years away from wide mainstream adoption
cubes158
Am I the only one thinking it’s more likely the Switch 2 can convert to be a VR solution?
Like a Google Cardboard that the Switch 2 slides into with a head strap.
You basically have a cordless wireless VR/AR device with detachable remotes and good battery life, at basically no extra cost and universal appeal.
Sproketz
My God I hope this is true.
I’m a huge VR nut, and if anyone can breathe new life into VR, it’s Nintendo.
Readyletsgodrones
Probably just me but I have zero interest in VR.
Got psvr at launch, used it for about a month, sat in a press until a few months ago and sold it on.
Had another VR head set around that time for my PC too, sold it on a few months after I got it.
Just, I just don’t like VR.
Nawt_
Nintendo is probably the only company in the world that can make VR a household entertainment staple.
jakehosnerf
Labo 2
Crypt_Knight
Right now the main problem with VR is that jit’s very expensive and has very few worthwhile games. So unless Nintendo plan to release a full VR lineup of games, I’m not sure what the plan is here.
spam-monster
As a person who only owns Nintendo consoles and doesn’t have the money/space for a gaming PC setup, this would be a dream come true.
I would really like VR Chat, but I can’t see how Nintendo would add that to the store without severe restrictions, so maybe some kind of Miiverse/Wii Sports/VR Chat hybrid where people can play minigames together and upload custom levels?
