Wow, I just assumed it was a port, they really remade every single asset from scratch!

So I wonder if they made any gameplay additions or changes? Maybe another gauntlet mode?

Appreciate this video for doing a good side by side and highlighting key things. In simplistic terms, it’s a brighter looking game that’s pretty faithful to the original.

I do prefer the look of the original game when comparing the two. I’m reminded of when SEGA did a HD remake of Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 and how textures were updated and whatnot, but it’s something about the original look from the Gamecube era that clicks with me more.

I’ll still probably pick this up to replay the game. Much better than having to bust out the OG copy over and over and wear the disc out.

Seems like a Tales of Symphonia situation, where they halved the framerate for no reason.

Edit: Are people seriously okay with this?

They changed the carpet edge from teal to green. 0/10, completely unplayable.

(Can’t wait to buy it, lol.)

I love the modern paper mario art style. I so much prefer the Papercraft style

Yet again they have gone completely overboard with the paper-craft theme. There was absolutely no need to change it to the level they have – players have given this feedback to them for the last few games they released in the series.

I love how the partners and NPCs are way more expressive now (actually showing visible shock instead of a mere “!” appearing above their heads) and have “voices” that match their respective species (Koops speaking with Koopa SFX for instance).

This is probably the objectively best way to enjoy TTYD now.

Wow, that’s a lot better than I originally thought since I haven’t played the original game

  9. brzzcode

This looks insane honestly, its an even better remake than Metroid Prime Remastered was lol its pretty much TTYD but on modern paper mario art direction

I haven’t seen the video so not sure if the person highlighted the following but noticed that a picture with the partners from the first game was added in Mario’s house. A really nice touch

So excited for this game. Didn’t get to play the original so this announcement was huge for me.

I think they’ve struck a good balance with the style. I’m especially glad that they didn’t bring over those ugly white outlines from Color Splash and Origami King. The more subtle effect they’ve gone with is dramatically better. It’s reminiscent of the edge of cardstock or something, which is a much better look than the heavyhanded printer paper thing they’ve been doing recently.

Normally I’m first on board to complain about modern Paper Mario, but I think this is going in totally the right direction. I only hope it lands well and that they follow it up with a new game following in TTYD’s footsteps.

  13. I don’t like that the remake is apparently 30fps

It would nice to see some additional content… Like Luigi’s little side adventure 😀 just like the additions they made to the Mario and Luigi 3DS games.

So far it’s looking to be 1 to 1 with the original, though the picture of all of mario’s 64 companions in the house is a nice touch

  15. Gerbilpapa

    This looks awesome

But I miss the dot shading from the original. It was so distinct and added a real artsy feeling to a game about paper yknow?

  16. Powerpuff_Bean

I **love** that they’ve kept it faithful to the original but still managed to make it look more papery.

    Absolutely incredible

Damn i recently played through TTYD on dolphin with the hd texture pack and upscaled to 4k. Couldnt believe how good it looked compared to the original even though not all textures are done.

This remake is another step completely though. Facial expressions, the lighting, shadows and much smoother animations/many new animations will make a huge difference

I really feel like the new visuals look great in a vacuum, but they absolutley ruin the aesthetics of the original game. Everything is over brightened and desaturated, blindingly shiny, grungy textures are sanitized, god rays cover up scene details, the new UI clashes with the environment, and the overhead 3D lighting casts characters in full sunlight into shadow somehow. In almost every way it looks worse than the original, it’s got that “This guy made Mario 64 in Unreal NINTENDO HIRE THIS MAN” feel to it where they overdetailed everything without knowing what made the original details work so well in the first place. I really hope people end up enjoying this remaster, but I can’t look past the downgrades from the original. Especially if it ends up running in 30fps.

I’m so amped on this. Never played Thousand Year Door on GameCube and finally finished the original Paper Mario when they brought N64 to Switch.

I am so unbelievably happy for this announcement. One of my top 5 games all time.

  21. Show-Bubbly

It’s amazing how good the original looks.

This is sick. I had recently restarted my playthrough on this but seeing it’s going to be on Switch I’ll gladly start a new run on it instead.
