Is there any better karting game than Diddy Kong Racing on the N64?! This Rare classic was truly ahead of its time! I was a huge fan and feel it was better than Mario Kart 64 in almost everyway! Feel free to check out this fun podcast where this classic title is discussed!

Please come to NSO please please an actual game I’d play

Much like Mario Tennis GBA I think DKR benefits a lot more from the framing device than you would think. Making it a semi adventure just added so much value and fun.

Diddy Kong Racing is fun and incredibly nostalgic, but I like Mario Kart 64 way more. And I might like Mario Kart Double Dash even more than those two.

It kicks Mario Kart 64’s ass any time of any day. Not sure about MK8 Deluxe, Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled and Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed, but it’s up there with those.

Too bad re-releasing it is a legal nightmare but if GoldenEye 007 made it I don’t see any reason for DKR to not come to NSO.

On N64, it’s much better than mario kart. So much bigger in scope with a lot more value, and an equally engaging multiplayer

My friends and I preferred Mario Kart 64 by a lot. It was much more fun. But we did break up Mario Kart 64 sessions with the a bit of Diddy Kong Racing. I can see preferring solo DKR over solo MK64, but we always had 4 and MK64 was where it was at.

Diddy Kong Racing diffed Mario Kart in every way. Some good some bad.

Diddy Kong absolutely had better story mode, organized worlds, secrets, waaay more objectives than Mario Kart, unlockables.

Unfortunately for DKR, Mario Kart handles better, had a more modern AI system, and had better individual level design. Mechanically Mario Kart won but creatively lost on all accounts.

DKR built off Mario Kart 64s foundation the same way Banjo-Kazooie built off Mario 64

If we are talking N64 kart racers than it might be the best but if we are talking kart racers overall then Diddy Kong Racing is severely lacking!

I always loved the single player mode which was surprisingly deep. Exploring the overworld for secrets and the boss fights.

I remember this game being hard AF for me when I was a kid. Not sure if it would be a breeze now, but some of the challenges were extremely difficult IIRC. Great game.

Hummm, yeah? Mario Kart 8 DX, Sonic and Sega ASRT, Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled and Mario Kart DS to name a few.

It’s a good game but nothing special by today’s standards.

  13. MonochromeTyrant

For me, literally anything else. DKR never clicked for me, even as a kid, and it likely never will.

I honestly played this so much. It’s up there with Zelda, Banjo Kazooie and Mario 64 in my memories. Definitely passes the vibe check.

This was a lot of fun. I loved the story mode and the silver coin challenge was a great way to get extra versions out of the same tracks. A lot of swearing in my house with that.

  16. Single-Player, sure, DKR is clearly superior. Multiplayer though? MK64 takes the cake IMO. Even though I did sometimes play DKR with my friends as a kid for variety’s sake, MK64 was just always more fun.

If we’re also including modern titles, MK8D is streets ahead of both of those in every aspect.

DKR was so much better than Mario kart. I loved the adventure mode and the characters had much more differences between them and I loved the choice of three vehicles

  18. kapnkruncher

DKR was more ambitious at the time, but I think MK64 aged a lot better. And honestly CTR probably trumps both, though not on N64 of course.

  19. DarkNemuChan

I actually didn’t like it at all.

Give me ‘snowboard kids 1’ and ‘mario kart 64’ over it any day!

  20. KasElGatto

On the 64? No. There are many better Kart racers outside of that though.

To this day my gaming alias is Tiptup. Way ahead of it’s time.
