Read my lips real slow Bowser:

Will it have Backwards Compatibility or nah?

  2. You know I tend to forget that the president of Nintendo of America is a man called Doug Bowser, then every so often I see a headline that reminds me. It never stops being incredible.

The optimistic way to read into this is to think that digital purchases and save data will transfer over to the successor, otherwise why would having the shared account be important. But I don’t know if I’m that optimistic about nintendo when it comes to everything but their games.

  3. MisterSheeple

Yeah, compared to last gen’s NNID which was a dumpster fire.

  4. Exaskryz

Let me translate: Like with every other new console, we’re launching a brand new account, subscription, and method for making friends. Say hell to 19 digit friend codes!

  5. BlueJoshi

noting of course that this was also one of the purposes of the NNID, which they immediately bailed on.

I’m inclined to trust it this time, if only because this time people actually know it exists. Nintendo accounts were Nintendo’s response to people demanding Nintendo implement.. exactly what NNID already was. But it was something they did publicly and loudly.. and importantly (or I’m sure they thought so, at least), not tied or related to the Wii U at all.

Because you’re going to carry over game libraries and NSO apps, right?

*Because you’re going to carry over game libraries and NSO apps, RIGHT?*

  7. I look forward to the fights about whether Nintendo should still be releasing new Switch games once a new platform is out or if 100% of their resources should go to the new platform with no install base.

And then those 6 “new” games will skyrocket in price due to extremely limited print runs.

  8. supervegeta101

Transition? I swear if they create a “new” online store, and service, and retro program, for a low yearly subscription proce of whatever I’m out.

I should just be able to log in, download the games I already payed for. Download the save files from the cloud. Download the game streaming apps they’ve already made and be done.

    No more nostalgia milking.

  9. RosePhox

This sounds a lot like “backwards compatibility for digital content only”.

I swear to god: If my cartridges don’t work on the sucessor, Imma skip Nintendo for an extra 15 years and just stick to emulation.

Nintendo loves pulling the plug on every one of their digital storefronts. No way I’m ever going full digital with them.

  10. Atomic_Teapot_84

Ok but the bigger problem is the new switch is rumoured to be LCD, so I’m going to still want to use my OLED for my entire library so far. Theyre going to need some killer exclusives pretty quickly otherwise I’m probably going to hold off a lot longer than I usually do (I usually buy on launch or a few weeks later)

  11. N3WG4M3PLVS

Maybe switch 1 games will need a patch to work on switch 2 … cause … no native compatibility …

  12. BUT WILL IT HAVE BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY??? /s

  13. DominoNX

I just pray that Switch games will run better on the next one. Nobody talks about the opportunity they have here

  14. IsamuAlvaDyson

People need to remember that Nintendo of America doesn’t make all the decisions at Nintendo, they are just the marketing and legal arm for Nintendo in this the USA.

This could all change depending on what the actual people in power in Japan do or say.

  15. MrDrSrEsquire

The fact they didn’t outright say your purchases will finally start carrying over should worry everyone

  16. Jaded_Apricot_89

Hopefully they just get with the bleeping program and have ecosystem wide accounts not just tied to the freaking device.

  17. beamsplosion

Yeah they have said this since the Wii U and it never happens. I’ll believe it when I see it.

  18. Uh huh. Anybody else remember when Reggie promised there were no friends codes on switch?

  19. Sega-Forever

I hope my digital game library will follow to the next console “to ease transition” as well.

  20. MarcsterS

I mean, NNID was supposed to be *the* unified system too.

  21. I hope so I do not want to deal with another purge.

  22. EriclcirE

If the Switch 2 isn’t backwards compatible with my Switch 1 digital library of games, I’m gonna ease the transition of bofa deez nutz onto Mario’s chin.

  23. The Wii U actually had “accounts” with usernames, video chat, and a bunch of other cool features that we were promised on the Switch (usernames at least). That never happened, and the Switch, while far far far superior, felt like a step backwards on launch day in that aspect. In hindsight it didn’t matter. The Switch is fantastic without them.

Some “account” features would be cool. I know it’s not Nintendo’s priority, nor is it needed, but we can at least get some XBL or PSN features that 360 and PS3 users had 20 years ago lol.

  24. TheReturningMan

This is the least informative answer Nintendo has ever given about their next console. So long as I don’t have to make a new account with Nintendo (in the way you did from Wii U to Switch) they’ve technically succeeded in “using Nintendo Account to ease the transition”.

  25. NSO does a hard reset! All the games gone and released on a schedule! The Nintendo way

  26. SuperNintendad

This isn’t a new quote by Bowser is it? I feel like he said this much earlier in the year. Basically hinting that accounts more or less will carry over.

    Guess eurogamer needed more clicks.

  27. Lost_Low4862

Why do I not believe that at all? Oh yeah, because I’ve had the same account since the 3DS, and it means virtually nothing. Outside of a screen name, almost nothing of value has ever been carried across consoles. *Not even virtual-console games that are on both 3DS and Wii U!*

Unless Nintendo re-commits to backwards compatibility, this will be nothing more than a way to log back into your account to buy different versions of things you already bought.

  28. MaddestChadLad

If i can’t use switch cartridges in the new one then i won’t purchase it

  29. Freestyle-McL

So finally the time has come, were I don’t need to make a new account every time a new game system releases.

  30. spaceraingame

I hope that means backwards compatibility

  31. theblindelephant

If they don’t, I probably won’t buy the next generation. I have a huge catalog on switch.

  32. Bow_ties_4all

It sounds promising that they are not going to change the game cartridge format and you will be able to easily download your digital games, but it’s also Nintendo. The company that always changes things even when they already have something good.

  33. lgndk11r

Digital shouldn’t be a problem, I mean, Xbox did it from 360 to One (eventually) to the current Series consoles.

I just hope that the card slot is just the Switch’s, but capable of larger capacities (100GB, anyone?).
