Well, I mean it’s a good goal to have, but I think it’s safe to say it’ll likely never happen.

Considering both series’ track records, you’ve got a better chance of Morrissey advocating for eating meat.
In fact, SEGA will always be to me the company that could have given us the epic Shenmue saga, but instead chose to shit out Sonic 06.

And I would like to date Emily Ratajkowski, but that doesn’t really help me does it

That’s funny didn’t they try this before

Yeah like that is going to happen. Sonic has never had a game like that was worthy of winning the GOTY. On the other hand Mario has had a lot of games that have received Critical Acclaim and have become iconic.

“Person wants to fly and turn litter into gold”. Is this really news?

Sonic has the potential to become so much more, but SEGA will have to actually properly leverage that potential and safeguard the IP, otherwise Sonic will simply stay right where it currently is.

Make one great modern Sonic game, then we can talk

Where was this ambition when the Dreamcast needed it

Everyone does. But if they do actually truly want to do that, they kinda have to either give the franchise to another team or change leadership drastically. There is some good stuff that they’re trying to do but nothing is as tight as a Mario game. Frontier was an interesting experiment and the new 2D one looks like a decent return to form but it’s still not quite to the level of mario (from what I’ve seen, haven’t played it personally). They’re making good strides though.

Just like all of them WoW-killer MMOs.

You don’t become an executive director by being realistic about your product lol

You know what, I’m going to side with SEGA on this one.
Sonic has the potential to surpass Mario. I’m not saying it’s likely to happen, but I think Sonic has a better chance in comparison to other mascots. It almost happened in the 90s.

Imagine being a video game character without a single good game 🥲

Good thing Sega does what Nintendont.

Then give the devs time, resources, and love it deserves, then maybe it’ll be on pair in a few years

Considering Modern Sonic is not only outsold by Mario, but LoZ, Splatoon, Super Smash Bros, and Animal Crossing, and is on a level of sales closer to Fire Emblem and Metroid (great games btw)…
Not gonna happen lol.
DarkAres02
It can’t surpass Mario, but Sonic’s been doing really well lately and I’m optimistic it will continue to get better. Mania, Frontiers, and Superstars are all good games

Oh my God. That’s hilarious

This has been the goal since day 1 for them, so nothing changed?

Maybe if you want to do what Mario does, have a team
of incredibly talented devs work on 1 game for a few years before releasing it, instead of this absolute farted out trash you’ve been putting out for decades.
ned_poreyra
Considering that the best Sonic game was still worse than the worst Super Mario game – they’re delusional.
Atmp
The only chance of that happening is if they start churning out amazing games for the next 30 years, the people who grew up with mario get old and die, mario starts sucking, and the next generation remembers all these amazing sonic games.
LittleLagoonEU
That will only happen once Nintendo wants Mario to be worse than Sonic.

Uh
Y’all know that stopped being a thing in like 1999?

Sonic Team and Sega don’t even know what the fuck they want Sonic to be. The fandom doesn’t even know what they want the games to be. 2D or 3D? Serious or lighthearted? Adventure style or boost? Whatever the fuck Lost World is?
Nintendo knows what it wants out of Mario. Fun for everyone. The 2D Marios were a constant evolution with new tricks. Every 3D Mario can trace it’s DNA back to Mario 64. Mario 64 set the foundation for a 3D Mario and every game sense looks to improve upon it in some way with adding some clever new mechanics, instead of trying to completely reinvent the gameplay every 2 or 3 attempts.
Meanwhile, Sonics head honchos are constantly at odds with what the fandom seems to want and don’t even seem to get that their biggest Sonic market is outside of Japan.

First thing first, release a game that actually achieves what sonic was originally advertised for, speed, every sonic game to me fails at that, if they could make a game where the movement matches the quality of movement in something like the insomniac spiderman games it would be the best sonic game ever made, no matter how bad the story or combat was.
If Sonic ever wants to reach real parity with Mario, it needs to create a movement system that feels truly satisfying.
