Snippet:
>The Pokemon Company COO Takato Utsunomiya has said that the intention is for Pokemon to last for centuries, outlasting its creators and current fanbase.
>
>The Pokemon franchise has become the most profitable media entity of all time, extending beyond the gaming world and into movies, TV shows, card games, and merchandise. Not even Mickey Mouse or Star Wars can overtake Pikachu and his pals in terms of revenue.

I miss when Pokémon was just a gameboy color game.
langstonboy
Unsurprising it’s probably going to exist until it’s copyright runs out.
cid-lantro
Happy to know while our A.I likenesses are on a colonized Mars we’ll still have Pokemon
jetsetmike
But do they also plan on making games that look like they belong in 2023?
wayiswho
If that’s the goal then they need to work on the quality of the content

Can’t wait for Pokémon Hard and Pokémon Flacid version

I don’t know about hundreds of years but it can certainly be around for at least a half century. But they have to do things right if they want to aim for hundreds of years. I feel like while the franchise is still huge, the games have been lacking and felt as if they have been pushed out year after year and not as polished as some of the older games. Of course there’s still the anime, card game, plushies, etc., so the games aren’t all of the revenue. But I’m wondering if they continue down this path if it will become less popular as time goes on. Maybe if they try more of a Legends Arceus approach it will work. But who am I to say, people are going to buy Pokémon games just because it’s Pokémon. So even if the games decline they’ll eventually move on to different ideas. It’ll just be interesting to see the progression of Pokémon even 20 years from now.

Hey, the planet’s gonna be nigh uninhabitable in about 30, so can we maybe like…y’know, streamline the process *now,* so the games can be better sooner rather than later?
Sorry, I just don’t wanna wait a long ass time for all the shitty management to pass away in their 100s so they can finally be replaced by competent modern developers.

By 2123 we’ll finally have a Pokemon game look and run on par with today’s standards
GriffinFlash
It’s just Pokemon and their adventures, Pikachu. Pokemon forever and forever. Me and Pokemon running around, and all day long, forever. All a hundred days. Pokemon forever and even for 100 years. Over and over, Pokemon100yearsadventures.com. All 100 years.

Take the mainline games away from Gamefreak and give it to a studio that can keep up with the current tech. There is no reason a gaming franchise that is expected to go on for centuries needs to keep giving the IP to a studio that peaked with the 2D games.
Would love to see Nintendo give Square Enix the opportunity to overhaul the franchise. Their work on the latest Dragon Quest games show their ability to make a campy JRPG with hundreds of whacky creatures look and feel like a modern game without losing the sensibilities that made the game popular in the first place.

Then be sure to continuously improve and innovate. Don’t get lazy/cocky.
The most popular things can fail and fade away.

Quality over Quantity then Pokemon Co.
CMDR_omnicognate
At the rate we’re going right now, there’s going to be more Pokémon than actual animals
nintendo_nerd64
Yeah so I think this is the goal of everyone that manages a brand, how this is a news article is beyond me
Dukemon102
If the games keep becoming worse. There will be a day when no one cares about Pokémon and the games will flop out of pure apathy.
That’s when massive franchises start to fail, not with boycotts, online rage campaigns or whatever. Just look at the MCU now.
liberocinderace
Take care of it well, and it will last hundreds of years. Don’t treat it well, and you might as well kill the goose with the golden egg.
tigertron1990
I dread to think just how many Pokemon there will be. We’re already over like 1000…

Somehow i hate this

Normally the idea of my favorite franchises ending makes me sad, but this just sounds terrifyingly dystopic.

“You, Pincurchin. I’d still have you.”

Damn, what’s their plan to solve climate change then???
vanillaicex3
Imagine the quailty of the product not increasing
Sonicrules9001
I mean, duh? I’m pretty sure if you asked anyone in charge of any series, they’d say the exact same thing. I’m sure Nintendo wants Mario to stay alive for hundreds of years, I’m sure DC wants Batman to stay alive for hundreds of years, hell I’m sure the Bubsy devs wanted Bubsy to stay alive for hundreds of years. No one wants their IP to die or fade away after all.
Kadejr
Maybe improve the quality first. $60 is too much for what we get imo. Maybe at a $40 price tag its fine
ThePickleHawk
There’s something very existential about that headline.

Poke Sword/Shield destroyed my faith. Official Pokemon is soulless and dead, we can see it will be a money-grab DLC fest.. *Gotta buy ’em all™* but maybe the spirit of Pokemon could live through hacks and replaying the old games through emulation, online MMO hacks, friend groups playing Poke Blue or Gold on Android and battling during recess or breaks at work. I just won’t support the way it’s been going, have fun tho everyone else.
Rinku588
That sounds like a threat
blukirbi
At the rate they’re going (80ish new Pokemon per gen, excluding regional/gimmick mechanic forms), there needs to be about 12 more gens of Pokemon before it reaches the milestone of 2000. That’ll prolly be about 50 more years before such a milestone can happen.
By then, the games will probably be technological trainwrecks but everyone will still buy them because Pokemon.

sweet I get to play a new pokemon game on my death bed

“Have no fears, we’ve got stories for years!”
Smash_Nerd
Once the nostalgia runs bare from the generation of people that grew up with the good gens, sales are gonna start dropping. Gamefreak is NOT equipped to deal with AAA titles as of now, they need to hire a lot of new blood and they need to make sure that new blood becomes old blood in 20 years. Experience with a game series >>> Numbers
SenKats
I don’t think you have the facilities for that, big man.
PM_ME_YOUR_SOULZ
That’s cool and all, but maybe don’t let the quality drop.
Gen 4 remakes were awful, Sword and Shield weren’t great. Legends Arceus was really good and Scarlet and Violet are okay.
