Reading the press release, the big reason why they chose to cancel the event is due to the threats extending outside of Nintendo employees.
They’ve been receiving threats that targeted Nintendo employees previously, but this time it extended to event staff and attendees. To ensure the safety of everyone, the decision to cancel the event was made.

Ahhhh hell. Why would anyone threaten Nintendo or any video game developers out there who work their asses off. It’s sad really. These threats were made towards Nintendo staff at first, but as the event drew closer the threats started to include event staff and attendees of the Splatoon Koshien Tournament that’s being held next weekend in Tokyo. I can only assume some shitty little entitled kid didn’t make it through to the finals made the threats.
With Koshien being postponed the Japanese team can’t be decided for the Splatoon World Championships that would’ve been held at Nintendo Live in January. Nintendo can’t guarantee safety at that event too, so Nintendo Live gets cancelled resulting in the Mario Kart World Championships also getting postponed.
I wonder what happens now to all the overseas teams and families that had booked flights and accommodation for the event.
edit: this reminds me of the Nintendo shareholder general meeting last year? the year prior? where that crazy person literally bought thousands of yen in Nintendo stocks to attend the meeting to ramble on asking why the Splatoon Boy was “being treated so unfairly” in that there was a lack of customization in game or something.

Secondly, this year has been *amazing* for Nintendo fans. Super Mario Wonder, Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4, and much more.

So uhm.. i scrolled through here trying to figure out why these threats happened (not that this shit is ever justifiable), and the closest I could find to an answer is “No Waluigi in Smash.”……….. tell me that’s not the reason. Please.
