She bought it from Walmart in Canada and gave me the download card (Here’s a [picture](https://multimedia.bbycastatic.ca/multimedia/products/1500×1500/139/13978/13978159.jpg), from Bestbuy). Now my previous experience has been that on the card in the picture (or on the back of it) there’s a little plastic credit card sized card where you scratch your actual download code and redeem it.
The instructions say a code will be emailed to you within 24 hours, but nobody asked for her email. To make things more interesting, her POS receipt was near a heat source and has blacked out. She went back and got a copy of the receipt, but there’s no 16 digit code on it and it says “phone card activated” with an 8 digit code. The redeem link on the Nintendo site only wants a 16 digit code.
She says the Walmart salesperson who sold it was an elderly lady, so I don’t think there was any foul play, but maybe someone had stolen the plastic card and she didn’t know it’s supposed to come with it? Or maybe they work completely differently and I’m the n00b here!
