Game Pass/PS+ vs. eShop – Playing for “free” vs. Buying

Game Pass Ultimate and PS+ will offer so many great games as part of the monthly subscription, and some great games are playable as part of the catalog on day one.

Recent example of this is [The Pedestrian](https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/the-pedestrian-switch/) \- though I’ve run into this for a number of other games over the years. There’s certain games that I wish to play on handheld, which is where the dilemma comes in:

Why pay for a game that I already have full access to, just because I have a preference to play on the go.

What do you do when you have this predicament?

I don’t go for subscription models with games.
I don’t blaze through new ones every ten seconds, and I’m not paying into infinity to continue to access them, and then lose access to them anyway when the servers inevitably shut down, with nothing to show for it.

Also if you’re paying for a subscription service, claiming that you’re playing “for free” is a complete lie. You’re paying the sub. You’re paying to play.

My public library has games and it is free, or at least funded by my fellow taxpayers

  3. Wherever you think you’ll actually play it. Also if there is a cost factor to you. The Pedestrian is a relatively short game, under 5 hours.

A game you have access to via a subscription service is a rental, and nothing more.

You’re paying for access for a limited time, you need to keep paying to retain that access, and you have no real control over what you have access to.

If you’re the kind of person who really doesn’t care much about your games – if they’re just time-wasters or something to do every once in a while – then yeah, I can see why you’d like it. I feel essentially the same way about what I get on Netflix.

So the thing with gamepass at least is that games are usually there for 2-3 years and then leave. Like ac origins I liked so much I went ahead and bought it on sale for like 15 bucks. I don’t have gamepass anymore though cause I can’t make full use of it so it’s not really worth it to me.

On Nintendo I try to buy physical only. The small cartridges makes it so much more convenient than the big disks. They’re also quiet.

Nintendo already has a subscription service like that… though the newest game on the service was made in 2001 (2005 with Expansion Pack).

I have Gamepass and PS+. But I still buy things like the steelbook for Halo Infinite. Skyrim is another one. I’ve had it since release on Steam. But I bought it on cartridge for my wife for the Switch since she doesn’t care to sit at her PC to game. I also started over playing it on Gamepass because it had been years since I played, and I like achievements.

Lord, why compare subscriptions with an online store 🤦🤦
