It’s insane how many classics are still missing from that list.

MYST or Sim City should make it over Metroid.

MYST was THE CD-ROM game that everyone was exposed to.

Sim City has huge cultural relevance. It elevated the Sim genre to something that normal people went out and bought.

Honestly, not sure Metroid should get in based on these picks

I’m gonna say Guitar Hero, Resident Evil, SimCity and Myst are getting, maybe Ultima or Elite as runner ups

  4. skeltord

Metroid might be revolutionary but I will say that of all the “80s games that revolutionized gaming but didn’t age the best” Metroid has aged worse than most, it’s a damn crapshoot nowadays tbh

  5. Out of this group, it should be SimCity, Metroid, Ultima, and Asteroids. That said, I think the group is pretty weird and how they ended up with Neopets and Guitar Hero in the same group is almost inexplicable.

  6. millbeppard

I would say Metroid, Asteroids, Resident Evil, Tokimeki Memorial should take priority but that’s just me.

  7. Phazon_Phorager

I remember making a video for why super metroid should get in, but if the NES game is the one that gets in instead, it’s more than deserved, the influence, importance, and long lasting impact that metroid has had should easily enough to get it in the HoF.

  8. _Homer_J_Fong

Yeah, Metroid is easily one of the least essential games on this list.

  9. Applepitou3

Resident evil and astroids easily. By far the most important and impactful games there

  10. Why is there only one finalist?? Why not all of these games

  11. Just finding out there’s a video game hall of fame. It’s also only 30 minutes away from me. I gotta visit it now

For everyone saying Metroid should not get in over the other games, it pretty much created the concept of the Metroidvania style of gameplay.

Every Metroidvania from Metroid’s own sequels to the Castlevania games like Symphony of the Night, to modern indie Metroidvanias all owe their lineage to the first Metroid.

That what makes picking only one of these games so sad. All these games have a legitimate claim to the Video Game Hall of Fame.

Simcity not only created a genre of sandbox simulation games, but the Sims spawned from it.

Myst pushed hardware boundaries on PC and CD Rom drives in the 90s.

Resident Evil popularized the survival horror game.

Ultima I is the grandaddy of both western and JRPG games with its concepts serving as the foundation of countless other RPG franchises.

JRPGs especially have a direct link to Ultima(and Wizardy) since Yuji Horii played Apple II RPGs like Ultima which was the inspiration for Dragon Quest which itself inspired other JRPG series like Final Fantasy, Earthbound, Phantasy Star, etc.

I get that most people here don’t give a shit or think Tokimeki Memorial deserve to be here, but it’s impact was pretty damn big.

  14. mucinexmonster

Everyone is caught up in what should be admitted instead of asking “Who are these people and why are they trying to gatekeep history”

  15. Interesting. Makes me wonder what games I would put in a video game hall of fame. And I think I’m gonna go with this. Anyone else want to share their own list?

  16. Asteroids, Metroid, and SimCity were transformative games that spawned entire genres in the web of gaming.

Myst was more or less a tech demo.

YDKJ, Tony Hawk, Ultima, and Resident Evil were excellent games, but kind of hard to group them with that first category.

  17. Out of all the GH games, why World Tour? GH1-3 are so much more iconic.

  18. PyrosFists

Super Metroid was probably more influential on game design

  19. Montresoring

The fact that Metroid isn’t in there all ready completely invalidates the “National Video Game Hall of Fame”

  20. nerdgeekdorksports

Metroid, Sim City, Myst, and Tony Hawk.
