Awesome visual, seems like the release cycle for them is about every 5-6 years, neat to see them going past 7 with the Switch.

  2. Moon_Dark_Wolf

Damn, the Wii U bombed so bad that they hopped off that shit ASAP in only 4 years

  3. pocket_arsenal

I’ll be honest, I could go a little longer, I’m simply not in a hurry to get to the next console.

EDIT: I’m speaking for myself, why are so many people replying to this

  4. Neither_Ad_2960

Debt free and they are feeling fine.

  5. Toothache42

This speaks to the success of the Switch in general. I know Switch 2 (or whatever it is gonna be called) is on the horizon, but I am happy to wait for that since there is still a lot of life in the Switch

  6. fredthegreat

Yes, but what about the periods that *weren’t* recorded.

  7. PixieDustFairies

Wonder what it’s like when you factor in handhelds…

  8. Bonus_Content

Switch still doesn’t even feel that dated to me. It has had some real legs and I will be sad to move on from mine

  9. GrandWazoo0

Don’t forget there was a global pandemic in this cycle…

OH, I wasn’t expecting the NES-SNES gap to be the record-holder. I was here expecting it to be the Wii-Wii U gap, although that was in fact the record-holder in the US at least.

IMO, 7+ years is way too long. I thought the length of Gens. 6 and 8 were perfectly fine. According to the chart, that looks like 4-5 years and that definitely sounds about right. After five years, I’m ready for some new innovations and upgrades. Beyond that it just feels like things are being drawn out. I remember feeling that way about the Wii and 3DS back in the day too (the 3DS-Switch gap was a couple years longer than the Wii U-Switch gap).

  11. Squid-Guillotine

That’s cool although I really want a more powerful switch right now tbh.

  12. soliddd7

But tbh, for me at least, it feels like one of the shortest, all thanks to all the great software coming every year

  13. I’d also like to see the stats for handhelds.

8 going on 9 years of constant support is pretty crazy in today’s console space. Even though the Switch has been showing it’s age a lot more in recent years it’s still getting a pretty respectable amount of support, both 1st and 3rd party. That’s probably why even though people are excited about the next system, we’re nowhere nearly as restless about it as we were back in 2016 leading up to the Switch reveal. We were in the content trenches back then.

    And the weird thing?

The switch still feels good to me. I’ve had mine since launch, and not only have I never had any issues with it, but it hasn’t even felt like I will.

The switch’s got loads of amazing system sellers at this point, a good pro controller, and is *all portable*.

I mean, think of the games we’ve gotten on here that are just immediate system sellers, and ICONIC ones at that:

Smash Ultimate, Mario Oddysey, AC New Horizons, Mario Wonder, Breath Of The Wild *AND* Tears Of The Kingdom, multiple gens of Pokemon including Pokemon Legends, new installments for franchises like Pikmin, Metroid, and Xenoblade, as well as so much beloved 3rd party support that I can pretty much play *anything* on switch that I’d want to.

Seriously, we’re being fucking *spoiled* with the switch.

  16. Nacklins

The Switch is probably my favorite console of all time but it’s definitely time to move on. The hardware is super dated and I’m ready to see what Nintendo does next.

  17. I forget that most people hopped on the switch train way later. As a day 1 buyer the switch has felt old for the last couple of years. I need me that switch 2.

  18. itzmoepi

Think it’s cause the wii u flopped so they released the switch earlier but they still maintained the overall schedule lol

  19. GraveDiggerSedan

I remember being very skeptical when the Switch was first announced. Had a feeling it was bound to fail like it’s predecessor. Glad I was totally wrong and it generated an absolutely amazing library of games. Really hoping the Switch 2 future-proofs a lot of their hardware so we can can another 8 years of gaming.

  20. Frostymagnum

Honestly, if they added 4 more gigs of ram to the switch I wouldnt even know why they move on. They struck it right with the Switch, and I could keep going on this console for a bit yet. I’m going to have to wait to get whatever animal crossing special edition they make too

  21. LiquidLogStudio

Crazy to own a nintendo console im not burned out on after 7 years

I dont even know if I need a Switch 2

  22. Wrong_Revolution_679

I think this shows how well they’ve handled this generation overall to allow them To go so long without releasing something new like this

  23. otorhinolaryngologic

It’s a great console, don’t get me wrong, but it seems like even Nintendo’s new first-party releases are becoming too graphically demanding for the Switch (stutters and slow-downs are becoming more common). It *needs* some new life, if for nothing else but to broaden the possibilities for Nintendo’s future first-party releases. Luckily, the console seems to be slowing down these days…

  24. ohbyerly

I’m so glad it’s for a good reason, being the Switch’s success

  25. Damuhfudon

They had to make up for the dismal years of the Wii U I assume.

  26. I think we’re at a point now where game developers can make the game they want without hardware being a major limiting factor. This is true of any platform. No one is in a hurry to release the next big console because no one is desperate for more horsepower anymore.

I mean, we’ll always have hardware refreshes. They just won’t be as urgent as they used to be.

  27. Great content!

I played on my neighbors NES when I was 5. Got a SNES the Christmas it came out when I was 6. Bought myself my first big purchase at 12- and N64. Then snagged a GameCube in highschool.

My son is 9 and has had a switch nearly his entire life. He may get 1 more Nintendo console before he graduates highschool.

  28. MetalCollector

The time between the SNES and N64 and between the N64 and NGC felt like aeons back when I was a kid. The last seven years just flew by… Perception of time really is a weird always changing thing the older you get…

  29. Shujinco2

It doesn’t really feel like it though. Feels like yesterday Breath of the Wild and Odyssey came out.

  30. defective1up

My daughter wasn’t even a year old when I bought the Switch. She’s in third grade now and plays it more than I do.

  31. flojo2012

I’ll be celebrating by firing up my SNES

  32. LS1CamaroZ28

I very well may be wrong on this, but I feel like I read somewhere Nintendo was going to attempt an 8-10 year lifespan on the Switch, and it seems like we are quickly approaching that!

  33. DrTrevorkian

Imagine Christmas, 6th grade, and you have had that same console all through middle school and high school, and onto college. Crazy!

  34. anyone wanna take a bet? I think they shat their pants when they saw that new piracy flashcart. Switch 2 wont be backwards compatible anymore. It was originally the plan, but not possible anymore cuz profits.

  35. Aggressive-Land-8884

“one more step, I’ll be the farthest away from home I’ve ever been”

  36. Miserable-Bear7980

It’s not a bad thing. Maybe for Nintendo, but for the sake of quality of games, it’s a great thing.
