Is this a “*this is why we can’t have nice things*” moment? Nintendo doesn’t like sponsoring the competitive scene for their games generally. We didn’t need them to have excuses not to do so.

This is how to do it as a company – take a pause, take a breath, assess the options, don’t rush it, do it right. Good job Nintendo

*Maybe* a dumb question, but does this mean the runner-up team are now the World Champions?

Also, well deserved. I don’t like it when people unearth an ancient edgy post against someone, but these guys had an extended history of saying awful garbage (some of which was, at the time, pretty recent to boot.)

if there’s ANY gaming community where homophobes should feel unwelcome, it’s splatoon’s.

I don’t really see this as being ammunition for Nintendo to be anti-esports. This was a Nintendo run event. They have better control over how their games are portrayed and how their players interact, hence this response. As disgusting as the conduct of these players was, the end result is Nintendo demonstrating a vested interest in protecting their players and the games they engage with.

Nintendo run tournaments are probably no one’s idea of amazing esports but at least when things go pear shaped they can put the boot down. A lot of the shit that went down with the Smash community in 2020 was made worse because, it being a grassroots scene, there was no central body that could take responsibility and act in a professional capacity to protect players from further harm.

Imagine pissing off a company so much that they updated their game to remove references of you.

If eSports are to be considered real sports, bad sportsmanship should not be tolerated. Good for Nintendo to call out this behavior.
