YouTube strikes and sketchy Nintendo emails demanding removal of videos of emulated Switch games

A friend of mine, who runs a YouTube channel with over 1 million subscribers, recently received several YouTube copyright strikes from "mm-nintendo.com" and "[tatsumi-masaaki@protonmail.com](mailto:tatsumi-masaaki@protonmail.com)," claiming to be from Nintendo of America due to his use of emulators for Switch games. After the strikes were lifted, he got an email from "[tatsumi-masaaki@protonmail.com](mailto:tatsumi-masaaki@protonmail.com)" (with "[brand-protection@mm-nintendo.com](mailto:brand-protection@mm-nintendo.com)" in the footer) asking him to take down five videos, which he did. Then more emails followed, demanding even more videos be removed, which he also did. The latest one said he’s no longer allowed to upload any Nintendo content at all.

What’s strange is that I found "mm-nintendo.com" linked to other takedown incidents, including some related to Garry’s Mod. My friend’s videos aren’t pirated—they're just emulated Switch games with some performance improvements like FPS mods or Reshade. Despite all this, he's really afraid these emails might be legitimate, and he's very worried about losing his YouTube channel. I’ve tried to assure him that it’s a scam, even reaching out to both Nintendo of Europe and Nintendo of America, who confirmed that the domain isn't connected to them. However, out of fear, he still doesn’t believe me and thinks this is 100% real.

Has anyone encountered anything similar or have any insights into what’s going on?

I never heard of this Tatsumi Masaaki person before and looking them up I don’t really see anything. If both NoA and NoE say the email domains aren’t associated with them, I’d believe them for now. There have been cases of people impersonating Nintendo to troll people after all.

  2. Seems like sketchy bullshit but I’m not sure what the point is in randomly getting him to take down videos unless he has competitors that would somehow benefit.

mm-nintendo.com is legitimate. Nintendo uses MarkMonitor to issue automated copyright takedowns, and that’s the domain they use.

That proton mail email address is fraudulent. Your friend can safely ignore emails from them, because markmonitor will always contact you through a mm-nintendo.com email address.

Spam bots and trolls pull this garbage all the time. I’ve had videos randomly flagged or copyright claimed by individuals who have nothing to do with it. YouTube is one of the worst when it comes to these false claims.

Nintendo is well within their rights to take down emulation videos.

  6. Here in europe one of the biggest nintendo youtuber also recently got strikes and had to take down like 30 videos. Right now Nintendo really tries to prevent emulation.
