From the reviews that are out, yes IGN has given it the lowest score, but the average from “bigger” outlets seems to be like 7/10… which is pretty low for a Nintendo first party title. The reviews share approximately the same gripes though.

And on the other end of the spectrum, Nintendo Life says it’s a 9/10 and the best one yet.

Mario & Luigi Paper Jam was incredibly disappointing, so I was a little wary of a new entry. All the trailers and early reactions have suggested it’s a return to form, so it’ll be interesting to see what the consensus ends up being.

I actually went through their review and while I can understand why some of the points (especially regarding hand-holding) might be valid – not sure it’s really going to dilute my personal experience with the game. Mario RPGs always had a unique demographic as far as RPGs go so, I will wait till I get try the game on my own. Still optimistic.

Played it, while it’s not a 5/10 I wouldn’t give it anything above a 7.5/10

Quickly giving a minor glance at the review I noticed they said that Luigi jumps with Mario and you can’t really individually control Luigi with button presses which sucks cause that was a big personality of the M&L games, I hope the reviewer maybe left easy mode on and that we can actually control Luigi more…

Guys just because someone else said the game is mediocre doesn’t mean that you yourself won’t like the game.

ITT: people mad at IGN for saying that the new Mario & Luigi game is too handholdy as if that isn’t somehow an issue with the majority of Mario RPGs

Oof. Really wanted this to be a good one. We’ll see what other reviews look like i guess.

i played like 2 hours only one i kinda agree tbh everything felt really bland…. the music , the stories , the combat , the characters overall and the game take you by the hand too much
SignatureStorm
Make it like Superstar Saga. That game was a masterpiece.

Eh, I’ll still give it a shot. There have been a lot of games that got bad or middling reviews (by either gaming review sites or YouTubers) back when they were released, but ended up being a great time when I was playing it.
Not to say that the IGN reviewer is wrong, but I think M&L in general is definitely a “your mileage may vary” type of game.
Like, if I took Dunkey’s opinion on JRPGs then I’d never have experienced some of my favorite video games ever. That doesn’t mean Dunkey is bad, it just means that his opinions on JRPGs doesn’t align with my own, which is the vibe I’m getting with this review.

Read the review he sounds like a fan and he is pretty disappointed

most people are acting kinda hypocrite right now, when they give Wonder a 9, they are based
now they give it a 5, they are ignorant and “never listen to IGN”
then what it is? only listen to them if they give a game I like a +8?
also, isn’t kinda pathetic to just buy and play a game only because it have a +8 on score from reviews in metacritic?
since Sonic Unleashed, I just stopped paying atttention from reviews and scores, and I just play games I find interesting from the trailers alone…
this one being one of those…

Many non-IGN reviewers seem to like the game just fine. Don’t base your decision on getting the game just on what IGN says.

Will see it for myself when I buy it. Shame he didn’t like it much but oh well, that’s his opinion

As someone who’s played the game, I’m not going to say some of these complaints aren’t valid, but even still, imo I think a 5/10 is an insane score for this game. It’s 1000x better than Paper Jam and I’ve really been enjoying it as a big Mario and Luigi fan despite a couple gripes. I think a lot of points are over exaggerated and some are just straight up not true.

“The tutorials and dialogue are constantly holding your hand – for example, almost anytime you enter a new area, the camera slowly pans over to your objective and slowly pans back, followed by an excruciatingly long explanation from new assistant named Snoutlet, who basically spells out exactly what you need to do. The dialogue repeatedly reminds you of the overarching story and objective, and Brothership spends far too much of its already bloated 34-hour runtime rehashing the same tired notes. I lost count of how many times new characters were shocked to learn Mario and Luigi were on a mission to reconnect all of Concordia’s islands. Plus, the large font size means only roughly a dozen words tops can fit in a single dialogue bubble, so you’re always mashing the A button to get to the next line in these insufferably long scenes.”
Ugh, seems like it’s Dream Team 2.0

Wait I’m blindsided by this because I am 30 hours into this game and totally addicted/loving it. Maybe I’m just stupid though.

Lol oh dear

This gone be good
They sticker starred it in the year 2024.
And some people still think reviews are paid off lol.
I 100% expect people to say “they gave this 5/10 but Veilguard a 9/10?!?” for the next few weeks or possibly forever.
5/10 Too much Mario
Reading this review, I believe it.
Because these sound like the same complaints I had about Dream Team almost verbatim.
Rather than be like “grr ign” I’m curious how many of these complaints hold water when the game fully drops. Cause trailers looked promising.
It’s one review and it’s IGN…
