They’re one of the few major game copanies to still want to hire people from all sorts of fields.

Talked to an old 80s-90s Nintendo engineer and he said it was a really calm and humble working environment that’s why the buildings and museum look the way they do. He remembers it really fondly so I’m not shocked.

Third among overall companies, first in game companies.
> First and second place were occupied by trade giant Itochu and food and biotech corporation Ajinomoto respectively, which makes Nintendo number one among companies in the entertainment industry. Other game companies that made it to the top 50 include Konami, Bandai Namco, Sega and Capcom.
> Nintendo’s high ranking undoubtedly has to do with its historical prestige and popularity as a video game company in Japan, but respondents were apparently also sold on how big the company is globally. In addition, Nintendo is known for having an unusually low employee turnover rate, which is close to zero (averages in japan are around 30%).
> This no doubt has do with the company’s high base salary which keeps increasing, but there’s a lot more to it. The CEO of a Japanese employment company named the following factors:
> “Of course, Nintendo’s comprehensive benefits play a role in this. They have a high rate of paid vacation utilization, offer strong support for parenting, and have a unique point system for employees that can be used for games, books, travel, and more. They also have a deep understanding of diversity and have introduced a partnership system that allows employees with same-sex partners to be treated as if they were married, among other progressive and practical initiatives.”

I was very fortunate to land a job at Nintendo in Japan. They treat employees very well and policies like ‘no AI’ show how they are very creator-first. They don’t care much for trends and are always playing the long game, as you’d expect from a company that’s over ~~200~~ 100 years old. The popularity is deserved.

Nintendo is a great company. They have ethics and core values that they adhere to. When you look across the landscape at other companies, the contrast could not be greater. Mass layoffs, studios being shut down, no chance to retrain (despite promises by HR), etc. It’s no surprise that people want to work for a company that respects the hard work their employees put into things and treat them as human beings instead of liabilities for shareholder profit and C suite bonuses from day one.

It’s true that they are kind of hard-handed on things like copyright, but that’s their position on the dial. Protecting their creators comes first over everything. That’s just how the ball rolls.
