Use your phone’s flashlight. It’s easier to see in person vs in my photo, and it works on all 3 edges that aren’t covered by the cover art.

This should be a pinned post at this point

  3. Pelthail

Don’t really know what I should be seeing.

  4. cetvrti_magi123

Scammers sometimes put plastic in there to make it look like game is inside.

  5. InternetSalesManager

Zooming in, I can clearly see the cartridge ridges. Nice tip, thanks OP.

Mostly checking for the gold on the pins, since they put on that black rubber/plastic to mimic the outline of switch game alongside the Googly Eye to hide it.

I got burned one time by this. It was with the Street Fighter Collection. My wife had a doctors appt and I went by GameStop first. Didn’t think nothing of it. When we got to office, I opened the case to find an empty holder. I was shocked. However the clear wrap they used was thicker than normal…that was my first clue. I called GameStop and fortunately but unfortunately the Game Advisor heard of this happening and no fuss exchanged my copy and verified the game was in swapped copy.

Whenever I buy a Switch since then, before I leave the checkout counter, I hold the case up to the light to certify I see that little black cartridge. Most of the time the employees are like WTF, and I explain and they get concerned and will start verifying their copies as well.

How the hell does this even happen…especially with 1st party games that are directly Nintendo owned/published!? I am 35 years old and been gaming since 5 yrs old on the NES and having pretty much every console except for Dreamcast. NEVER ONCE BEFORE SWITCH have I had to double check the product I bought. Be careful everyone and good fortune to consumers henceforth

  8. I mean Nintendo can make the case around the cartridge transparent to a level where you can barely see the cartridge inside. They must do it if they are going with cartridge in Switch 2. Because this bullshit scammers are getting out of hand.

OP, what an low cost, elegant, and non-invasive solution.

I just checked my imported from the US and local version (Australian) sealed games, thankfully they all passed the test.

The next time a big chain retailer check your cash to make sure it’s legit, bust out your phone and check their product and make sure it’s legit

  11. i don’t get it, what am i supposed to look at here?

  12. OKIlltakeallofthem

Wow. We really have to start doing this for every “New” game from now on. Thanks OP.

  13. darren5718

People will somehow invent a way to bypass this too. Thieves are next level smart it’s sad tbh

  14. This will at least tell you there’s a game cart inside, but sadly you still wont know if it’s the correct cart- i.e. a less expensive game cart swapped into a more expensive game’s case.

  15. REMUv777

Opened up my three unopened switch games today because of this bs, people are getting hella crafty

  16. Popular-Guarantee828

What am I looking at here. No explanation no description? Is it the light going through the case, are they checking the cartridge for something or the other? Wtf am I looking at gang?

  17. DoomedKiblets

Unless it has been swapped, but yea, this is,a good step

  18. MiLys09

Mods pin this too many posts recently about these googly eyes scams

  19. Fizzypoptunes

Have people been buying pirated games on accident or something? I’m out of the loop here

  20. Cheeseburger-BoBandy

My boy is that an iPhone 3G?

  21. Olli_Boy2006

I’m from Belgium and most stores have a policy where the clerk has to show you the cartridge as they put it in the box before they seal it.

  22. Winterhe4rt

What exactly is this checking? Only if there is any cartridge in it?

  23. Mamenohito

Ssshhh! Now they’re gonna start putting in plastic bits with shiney squares on the bottom.

  24. kindlyfackoff

And this is precisely why I always video record when I’m opening new electronic items anymore. I have video evidence as I’m opening it from the sealed state so there is no arguing and I do it as soon as I get it (if it was sent via mail) or get home (if I picked it up from the store). No matter what there are time stamps and I also have cameras to prove when I got home as well so timelines all add up. It’s sad I feel I have to do this to prove I am an honest person, but shitty people ruined things for everyone else.

I believe there’s two versions of the scam, the old one where your phone camera flash would work and the better one where a specific rigged zip tie is used to mimic exactly how a cartridge looks (think similar to a beyblade launcher strip). At first I thought it was sealed returns, but I don’t think it is anymore.

  26. DefinitionLittle1281

Honest question: Are people finding a way to pull the scam when the case is cellophane wrapped? Or is it just when a case has plastic around it that’s been shrunk with a heat gun?

  27. EyeAmKnotMyshelf

    1. Buy it from a licensed retailer.

    And done

  28. QuixoticTrey

Don’t understand what this is about.. so I’ll just leave 😂

  29. shawn-spencestarr

If someone was gonna fake a sealed game case, they could easily fake a cartridge.

  30. Curious_Education_12

The quality resolution on the phone cover is immaculate.

  31. AegisToast

At least until they start 3D printing little fake cartridges.

  32. jds8254

If I’m buying a game for myself, particularly at Walmart or Target, I cut it open right after the checkout just in case. If it’s a gift for someone and I don’t want to open it the flashlight trick is helpful.

Haven’t been burned yet but at least if I open it at the store, there could be no question since I haven’t left and have been seen and on camera checking it.

  33. HammofGlob

Definitely a good idea for new titles. But used ones could still be defective or broken. My brother just got back from Japan and the used switch game he picked up won’t read
