What do we call the rail? I'm going to keep calling it a rail because I don't have a better term. But here are 5 things I noticed about the Switch 2 Joycons.
- There's no IR sensor on the bottom of the right Joycon! There are the two mouse IR sensors in the Joycon "rail". But they seem to be different. Is one of the Switch 1 compatibility issues games that use the IR sensor? Thankfully that's only a handful of games.
- There's a little circle at the top of the Joycon. The circle is a plunger that pushes out when you push the release button. This is what pushes the Joycon away from the Switch. That would mean the Joycons connect with a magnetic connection and are physically forced away from the Switch to disconnect.
- Then the circle at the top and bottom of the Joycon seem to be mouse skate stickers. Slippery stickers so the Joycon can slide on a flat surface as a mouse. Edit: Some have said that these could be the magnets, but the magnets have to be under the plastic. I feel magnets can't be where they could come lose or fall out for swallowing safety. edit 2: This old joycon leak picture shows the joycon rail without the stickers which I think is even more proof: https://files.catbox.moe/8gen45.png
- There are two indents in the top and bottom of the rail. They aren't for attaching to the Switch, but do seem to be used to attach to the strap. The button on the strap is right at one of the indents. The straps are also open ovals, so the SL/SR buttons don't have button extensions in the strap. That's so the mouse feature works with the strap. But it's also why the SL/SR buttons are bigger. The SL/SR buttons can't protrude outside the strap ring or they would drag. So it may be odd to push the buttons when they don't stick out?
- The Joycons are constructed totally differently. On outside of the Joycon there's plastic along the outside edge. It goes from the bottom of the joycon all the way to the l/r buttons. Watch the video and you can see the seams. You can see the of plastic is a separate piece of plastic in some two tone Switch 2 Joycons that were leaked: https://www.resetera.com/threads/rumor-switch-2-joycon-designs-leaked-on-bilibili-magnets-confirmed-uploader-claims-that-production-volume-is-not-high-enough-for-a-march-launch.1049781/
The screws are on the rail edge of the Joycons. There are no screws on the bottom of the Joycon. Now I'm guessing that when the two screws are removed, that you can then take off the bottom of the Joycon. I kinda feel the top of the Joycon is the frame that the circuit board screws. Then the bottom of the Joycon is just a cover. But I don't know how the outside edge of plastic fits in here. The original Joycons had another internal frame that held the battery, so maybe the side plastic is part of that? I'm very interested in a teardown because it's just so different!
So what do you think? Did any of you notice anything about the new Joycons?
