Hot take, console reviews aren’t really worthwhile. Especially in this and the PlayStation’s case where they’re iterative. It’s a Switch, it’s better, and end of the day the only thing that matters is the library. Like you have to be extraordinarily bad to really set any alarm bells off.

Edit: Obviously it’s important to call out blatant systemic flaws or stuff that contradicts marketing. I say as much in my last sentence. End of the day though, I see reviews as influencing whether you should buy a thing or not, and reviews of the hardware aren’t gonna do that for a console. The library, services, and exclusives are.

Edit 2: That being said, yeah, does suck we won’t have game reviews early, but like the one big exclusive is Mario Kart World. Which is likely coming with most people’s consoles. Which you are gonna buy. Cause it’s Mario Kart.

Sucks but at the same time like 99% of launch stock is going to go to preorders so not like anyone is actually depending on launch reviews. If someone is taking the time to read a review the stock is already gone.

  3. motoroid7

Makes sense. Most reviewers were on the battlefield trying to get a launch day switch 2 as well. Some of them even live streamed their misery with glitches and crashes of store fronts via Twitch. 😅

  4. FoxyDude915

They’ll have to get their own systems at launch like the rest of us.

  5. DevouredSource

There will still be a lot of “first impression”

  6. MuptonBossman

I’m a fan of Giant Bomb / Kinda Funny and they both have said that Nintendo will only provide one Switch 2 for the entire office… Everyone else will have to pre-order like the rest of us.

  7. DaggerFall012

Who cares about major media outlet? Do they just want free Switch 2?

  8. inkyblinkypinkysue

Console reviews are worthless. They all get better as more games are released.

  9. were_only_human

We’ve also had such a glut of in-person previews that there’s very little that would surprise me in a launch day review.

  10. Mysterious-Issue-843

what would be the point of a console review? I buy consoles to play games. I couldn’t care less what random pointless metrics a place uses to make up a literally useless score.

  11. sleepinand

Does this we’re not going to get any launch game reviews at launch either? That’s really a much bigger issue.

  12. patiofurnature

I’ve never trusted media reviews anyway. I want reviews from normal people who spent their real money on something and don’t have any professional reasons to review with a bias.

  13. Will2LiveFading

I stopped trusting reviews years ago. I’ll take them into consideration when purchasing something, but their influence on my purchases is minimal.

  14. IcyXzavien

Looks like reviews of any game releasing on the console’s launch won’t be happening by the console’s launch.

  15. ShakeAndBakeThatCake

It’s an iterative improvement to the switch 1. Literally improves on every faucet of the original experience. It’s not vastly different. The main gimmick this time is mouse mode. I personally will never use it as I prefer to use the console handheld and chill on the couch.

Console reviews have never really made sense to me. Look at the N64 era. The console was just a box that played games. To review the console you’d need to review a game. So just review that. Same with gamecube era (though i guess you could review the DVD playing capabilities of the ps2).

Once consoles could start to be patched, what’s the point? Its a box that plays video games and other stuff that can be updated and changed whenever, so the review becomes obsolete.

The only reviews that made sense for a console were for: Wii, Wii U, 3DS, and switch.

For wii, testing waggle controls. It was nice to know how that felt compared to standard console experience. Wii U with tablet controller (though not nearly as important as Wii review). 3ds for the 3D aspect (which i always left off) and switch for how effective the “switching” was and the joy cons.

Since switch 2 is a super switch, no need for reviews. Will I still read them even after I’ve started playing my own switch 2? Absolutely.

  17. Lightmanone

It’s very simple. If you wanna play Mario Kart World or any of the Switch 2 exclusive launch games, you need the Switch 2. There. Done. Review is over. That’s basically it.

The only thing that’s a bit sad is that we won’t get game reviews on Day 1. It doesn’t matter that much for me tho. Mario Kart World looks like a ton of fun, and an upgraded BoTW/ToTK is very much welcome too <3

    >“We will need to cover Switch 2 while also working across Summer Game Fest. How are we supposed to do that?”

That one just kinda made me laugh. No offense but 90% of gaming outlets cover stuff like SGF with articles which are mostly just copy-pasted press releases.
Acting like that’s gonna be an impossible feat to do while reviewing a console launch (with launch games that are mostly ports, so they won’t even have to finish those games again) while having a whole team..
    That’s just laughable to me..

  19. I don’t even know when I will get the new console. I went through Nintendo because I met the requirements to request one but the demand was so high, I still haven’t got an email. Nintendo even said that due to demand, some emails won’t go out until after release.

It’s fine though, I don’t have much time anyways because I am in the middle of moving out and finding a condo. I will either wait for Nintendo to contact me or just try to get one a couple months after launch. I don’t buy from scalpers though, so it will suck trying to find one.

  20. It’s a new Nintendo console. I couldn’t care less what any reviewer has to say beyond what has already been said. I can sympathize with 3rd party devs releasing exclusives that won’t have day one reviews, but have no concerns otherwise.

  21. Tough-Priority-4330

I presume it’s to prevent leaks. You can’t leak anything if you don’t even have the console.

  22. VanityPit

That sucks. I always enjoy MKBHDs vids on new tech

  23. nashpdotcom

I prefer it this way. We’re all playing it at the same time on launch. No special privilege. Launch day will be that more exciting online.

  24. Ok-Comfortable-3174

I will get one when Odyssey 2 or BOTW 3 is announced but until then…I aint fussed.

  25. DontForgorTheMilk

I can’t remember the last time I took any reviews from a major media outlet seriously anyways. “Grassroots” (for lack of a better word) sources like actual people’s first-hand accounts are more valuable.

  26. This means that if there are any reviews that come out on day one, be very aware of them.

  27. Wow that’s pretty scummy. I mean people are going to buy it no matter what, but they should at least be able to make informed purchases.

  28. tytygh1010

Good! Then everyone gets a fair chance to cover it, not just a select few. They should stop giving out games early as well.

  29. stabzmcgee

Likely why donkey Kong is being released later, so people can get time to review it

  30. Corronchilejano

    >Some media have even been warned they will not have their machine until launch day. Nintendo has told journalists that this is due to the requirement of a significant day one patch.

Considering the rumors of what companies had been doing to get ahead of tariffs, I don’t consider this a surprise at all.

  31. Did they send the original Switch to media outlets early?

  32. MandessTV

Major media outlets are dying anyway. I’d rather hear from trustworthy youtubers than IGN.

  33. I’m assuming DK will be great but would really prefer to have a better idea before pulling the trigger

  34. PettyHedonism

I don’t get it. Everyone who has a S2 at launch will have pre-ordered, right? Why would we need a review?

Edit: If there is stock in stores day 1, that’s different. But I thought that was not gonna be the case.

  35. TsarOfTheUnderground

I simply do not give a damn.

Gaming journalism is ass. Period. Worse yet, it’s riddled with biases. Lots of people out there have a crazy hate-boner against Nintendo, and of course we have lots of Nintendo stans, so I just have zero faith that anything meaningful will ever be discussed.

  36. ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp

    > “We will need to cover Switch 2 while also working across Summer Game Fest. How are we supposed to do that?”

Oh no! You’ll have to actually work for once! The horror!

  37. snicker-snackk

I’m glad in a way. I’m feeling more and more that professional reviewers are ruining the industry. Independent reviews by real gamers are way better, but they don’t get the inside acces
