Here’s a slice of Nintendo history that not many people remember: Kellogg’s cereal ran a promotion in 1996 for the launch of the Nintendo 64 and Super Mario 64. You could get five Super Mario 64 collectible trading cards if you mailed in some Kellogg's box tokens. These weren’t regular cards either – they were lenticular 3D cards that showed early promo renders from Mario 64. One card even includes a tip for a shortcut in the penguin race mission… which sounds helpful until you realize that shortcut will actually make the big penguin refuse to give you the star!
The same promo also offered a cool prize: a limited edition N64 snapback cap featuring Mario. You had to win a sweepstakes to get the hat, so not many are out there. I was lucky to acquire the entire card set (still sealed) and one of those original Mario 64 hats recently. I’ve just finished a video where I unboxed and showcased these rare goodies and delved into how this 1996 promo worked. It’s a fun blast from the past for any Nintendo fan who loves learning about these odd little promotions.
