Well, his entire personality isn't being a gym leader! His entire personality is hitting you in the ribs.
I always thought his pose in B2W2 was a surfer pose seeing as he lives on an island in a tropical region with… a lot of water. I also like how his build is athletic while his signature pokémon is based on a bulky sumo wrestler.
Please, please, please make that video essay about Gym Leader design, I will be there.
I really like Brawly because he feels like he really belongs where he lives. Martial arts, surfing and Pokémon is what’s up in his community and he looks like the perfect person to be a leader in such a place. I bet he’d be great at being a YouTuber too. “I TOOK A WATER GYM LEADER FROM KANTO SURFING?!” I can clearly see it in my head.
I’m sorry, but I’m gonna have to hard disagree on your analysis of ORAS Brawly, his design is in no way indicative of someone who does martial arts. On what planet are muscle shirts and toe shoes indicative of martial arts, especially in an eastern culture inspired game? Because it’s not this planet, that’s for sure. His design is meant to be indicative of general exercise and fitness, clothing you typically wear to the gym, shoes meant for running, which is all mirrored by the redesign of his gym, now featuring treadmills, weight lifting equipment, and other exercise machines. A gym leader isn’t his entire personality, he’s literally a fitness trainer for people, a “gym bro” if you will.
PLEASE WRITE A LoNGER VIDEO ESSAY ON THAT IDEA
I miss when pokémon trainers weren't all walking stereotypes.
He just seems like a surfer. He gives of the vibes of someone who loves surfing and swimming
Blue hair Hwoarang… Thats how i knew he was fighting type back then
To be honest, I can picture a lot of similar outfit choices like his for the "beachside jogger" person. It's common enough to still feel mundane, in a way.
He was my gay awakening
I like his name
I knew they were fighting types bc my girlhood was consumed by crushes on these ones (fighting gym leaders)
Honestly when i first played the games i thought he was gonna be a water type gym leader at first, given the fact that hes on an island and looks like a surfer bro kinda guy. Really shocked me when he pulled up with the machop and meditite.
He's so SNK coded.
Look, I hundred percent agree with you, but do you not think the gym bro wouldn’t make being the gym bro his entire personality?? You’re correct but you chose the wrong guy as an example.
I feel like the og leaned more into "hipster monk" and the new one was more "gen Z fitness YTer"….
You missed an important part in his redesign in which they made brawly hotter, which automatically makes it a more compelling design, unmistakably.
I really didn't see that as ambiguous it was more like a tekken character in gen 3
Brawly- Surfer that's a Fighting type specialist.
Crasher Wake- Wrestle that's a Water type specialist.
This is my favorite analysis so far. Hope to see that longer dive!!
I mean is it as a hobby, or as a duty because they are the best of the best? It feels like you either have to be someone on a journey or a gym leader if you reach that level of skill. In fact, the league might demand it and maybe you get kicked out if you refuse; after all, Larry doesn't seem that enthused.
