I’d like to talk about how James from Team Rocket (in the anime) is, in my opinion, the most ace male character I’ve ever seen on TV.
He’s not interested in sexy girls at all. In the movie where he temporarily swaps bodies with Jessie, he doesn’t notice any difference and is naturally comfortable in her femake body and in female clothing. He cross-dress in the most natural way possible.
The Japanese voice actors for Jessie and James have often mentioned in interviews how much they love and value the absolutely unique, platonic nature of their relationship.
I wish more people understood that the old AU manga has no real influence on the anime—it’s actually the other way around. That manga, where James marries Jessie, was an AU loosely inspired by a few early episodes and created back in 1999. There are countless Pokémon AU manga, all completely independent from the anime. Once again, the Japanese voice actors have repeatedly emphasized how exceptional and important the platonic and unique bond between James and Jessie is to them but it seems like everyone avoids talking about it and ignores this topic 😢
