Nintendo

The Nintendo Switch 2 is only six months old, and retailers in most countries are already discounting it. Isn’t that kind of… weird?

I know I will likely get downvoted for even talking about this, but isn't it pretty unusual for a successful console (that had a record-breaking launch!!) to already be discounted almost everywhere?

At first, the Switch 2 was discounted in France, and people said "Oh, it's JUST France, that means nothing." Then, it was discounted in Spain, the UK, and many other European countries. Then, it was discounted in Australia. And now, it has even been discounted in the US:

At first, it seemed like this deal was only for Cyber Monday. But the deal is STILL going, and still in stock!

I think what makes this especially noteworthy is that just six months ago, people were saying "Buy a Switch 2 NOW, or the price will only go up!" And yet, the opposite has happened; people who waited just six months are already getting a good deal. I will admit, I was one of the people who bought a Switch 2 on Day 1 thinking "There's no way it will get any cheaper!"

I don't think Nintendo are "DOOMED". But, can we at least acknowledge how surprising this is compared to the pre-launch expectations?

No. It isn’t. It’s up to the retailer. Nintendo just wants to move as many units as possible. They discounted it themselves as well.

Units sell well and above expectations. Everything according to plan.

Christmas season is nearing, they’ve been able to keep stores stocked, and now they’re going in for a knockout.

Trees all around the world will be brimming with Switch 2s, especially now that they’re a bit less expensive.

So no, completely normal marketing strategy.

in most countries ? what are u even talking about ? that article is only for US cyber monday . Most countries dont have Wallmart and best buy dude

  4. Holidays are coming up more, probably orders a bit too many here and there.

It’s the holiday season. Everything gets discounted a little bit around this time it seems. Especially video game related stuff since it’s such a popular gift item. Drop the price and you sway more buys and get them bought in.

    Why do you care lol

Nintendo is going to be fine. They’re probably just discounting the system tk boost holiday sales.

It’s Christmas, and they want people to buy the consoles. idk that isn’t really weird to me at all

I never got the logic of “it will only go up”, it’s been 6 months, it should go down. It doesn’t even slightly affect anything, it’s not even in the slightest bit “doomed”, it’s performance is fantastic sales wise, there’s a annual discounted price every end of November throughout the whole world, with the newest console, of course it’ll be lower priced from release day.

  9. I don’t understand why people thought it would go up in price? Nintendo were very clear that they were almost over producing the console to ensure everyone who wanted one could get one. It makes sense that it’d be discounted accordingly.

  10. Still too expensive for a lot of people who already have a switch 1.

  11. No, this is not weird. Retailers got stock of the Switch 2, now the „magical market“ of competition is pressuring retailers to have the best offer (price).

This didn’t happen with Switch 1 / PS5 because of no stock. All units that where available where sold to the asking price. After the stock problem was solved prices did go down on retailers.

US is a different topic because of the Cheeto Man in office. Manufacturers might rise prices for all countries for „fairness“, but that is kind of open. No one know if and when this might happen, or the increase in price.

  12. What were your pre launch expectations, because the reality is that Switch 2 is breaking records left and right lol.

  13. Bubba_Apple

Probably because there are only few games and people don’t buy as much as during the premiere when they lived in hope.

Sales during the holiday are not weird.

  16. THATS BECAUSE IT FAILED WE WERE RIGHT REDDIT has nothing to do with santa

Many retailers do these unexpected sales to get you into their stores (online and in person) in hopes of making sales on other items.

These stores also want appeal to people who planned to buy the console as a gift, so they can be THE one to make the sale. In the process, they hope to unload some accessories and games to go with the console.

So, selling add-ons to the net sale can offset any loss from the discounted console.

Short term discounts also move high priced items up their “best seller” lists, and the console would be there to entice other buyers after the sale ends (causing a piggyback/FOMO effect).

I would guess that retailers (because they are setting these discounts, not Nintendo) are trying to pull people into stores and offer a bit of a bargain to tempt buyers during these difficult economic times. You need to sell a console to sell games.

  21. I swear to god it give me headaches how many people cant understand the concept of christmas promotion.
Those people are so desperate to have their “gotcha” moment its cringe.

“Cyber Monday” is Cyber Week now for a lot of companies so it isn’t really surprising to see the deal for the Switch 2 get extended when literally every other Black Friday/Cyber Monday deal got an extension. The entire Switch 2 launch has been weird because they launched in June while every other console has historically launched in November and there isn’t a comparable retail holiday in April/May. I wouldn’t put too much thought into it unless this becomes a forever discount.

If it turns out that not many people want to buy in at $450 for the console or $500 for the bundle, and a $400 console and $450 bundle sells better, that’s Nintendo and the retailers’ problem to figure out. I already bought the thing and got my moneys worth with the past 6 months of Mario Kart and Donkey Kong, I don’t care what price other people buy it for.

Obvious troll is obvious. It’s 3 weeks before Christmas. I’d be worried if Nintendo didn’t have things on sale.

  24. TheRyanFlaherty

I’m not saying what OP posted really matters, or anyone should draw meaningful conclusions….but the people acting like consoles being discounted during their first Christmas season is a normal thing are also F’n insane. Especially from the company that notoriously doesn’t put their games and first party offerings up at sales/discounts. But are responsible for the only two early console discounts for can recall….the 3DS and Wii U….which are the dots OP is probably trying to connect.

  25. Data-scientist-101

Nintendo makes most it’s money on games. More consoles sold = more high margin games sold. Win-Win for both consumers and Nintendo.

  26. TacoTrain89

they are trying to clear out the mk8 world bundles sitting in their inventory

  27. There’s only one explanation really.
The consoles are sitting in shops and they need to sell those.
Since it sells slowly, they have to cut the price.

So no, it’s not a good sign at all.

  28. ChiTownDog

This is literally only for the MKW bundle. So yes, you are getting Mario Kart for free but the console price has not gone down which you seem to be trying to say and that is misleading.

  29. Inner-Act5578

The fact that this console can be bought at all from retailers without an invitation is a sign it’s not selling as well as the switch 1 or ps5 did when they first launched. I remember having to request an invitation on Amazon to buy a ps5 and that was several years after it was released.
