I really don’t understand these articles. Last one I saw was saying it outsold the Wii u in the uk… like that’s a metric that means anything.
I bet it outsold the Dreamcast and apple pippin too

No surprise it’s doing so well in Japan. They alone get a special low priced unit that’s well below the price any other country gets, which also in turn makes it a very tempting option over a PS5 over there
EDIT: I was unaware that the PS5 also got a similar version there. Guess the Switch 2 is just doing well in general then

Isn’t the switch 2 absurdly less expensive in Japan exclusively? Almost at the level of a switch 1 in the western world?
They made a calculated decision to treat Japan differently from the rest of the world. Yet I’m seeing people trying to make claims for the entire console world wide just based on Japan numbers.
We all know demand for this thing would be through the roof if it was priced at switch 1 levels (and didn’t have game keycards).

We have to take into consideration that most players in Japan like to game on the go. Handhelds have always been very strong in Japan, much stronger than home consoles.

Good lord I didn’t realize the GCN did so poorly there. I’m amazed that characters like Ike from Path of Radiance and Aiai from Super Monkey Ball even managed to become fan favorites because their games were GC games.

Good counterpoint to the argument that games sell hardware – timing, zeitgeist, brand popularity, word of mouth and all that are significantly more important.

Happy for the Switch 2, but that’s just sad for me on the GCN side.
The GCN legit has some of my favorite memories ever in gaming. It’s the home of Smash Melee, it’s where I became a fan of franchises like Mario, Zelda, and Fire Emblem, and it introduced me to many 3rd party franchises I like such as Tales of Symphonia and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.
It legit has one of the best gaming libraries to me.
