This is my personal opinion.
Y:
– Better wing design
– Better arm design
– Better horns design
– Better-looking 2D official art
– Better shiny
X:
– Better color scheme (non-shiny)
– Mouth fire
– Better hand/claw design
– Better shoulder design
– Better-looking anime design (portrayed significantly better in the anime compared to the games)
In conclusion, I like the design of X more, but Y is great too.
If you just played the games and looked at the official 2D artwork for both designs (or just don’t like mega designs to look very different from the base form), I wouldn’t fault you for liking Mega Charizard Y’s design more than X. The official 2D artwork for X looks kinda weird. Skinny neck, SUPER skinny arms, a weird-looking snout, and it just kinda feels off compared to the more “correct-looking” Y mega. But seeing X in the XY anime and Origins REALLY did the design justice. FAR better-looking head, more proportionally appealing, and more intimidating. That’s the design I picture when thinking about Mega Charizard X. It’s a shame that Mega Charizard Y doesn’t have as much animated prominence compared to X. Too many iconic scenes and cool images of X are burned into my memory for me compared to Y. And I also just love the black skin and blue fire for Charizard.
If Mega Charizard Y’s regular colors were the same as its shiny colors, and instead of orange fire they gave it dark red fire, I’d probably like Y more. But I think both designs have their pros and cons, where if you combined the best parts of their designs, you’d get something better than either one separately. So if you gave X the wings, arms, and horns of Y, then it would look even better than it does now imo. And if you gave Y the color scheme, mouth fire, claws, and shoulder spikes of X, then IT would look way better too imo.
