Recently watched the first movie with my son who was just there to see Charizard and it got me wanting to replay the original game. I had a Blue growing up so I decided to replay Pokemon Red and of course use Charmander. To make it a bit different I used Pokemon who I’ve ever used while using the restriction that aside from Charizard they wouldn’t be top 30 in total stats. I ended up trying the E4 without much grinding (and saving my rare candies in case I needed a few levels) and I beat them in some fun battles.
Charizard was absolute beast all game, soloing Brock, Sabrina and Erika. Final move set was Flamethrower, Sword Dance, Earthquake, Take Down.
Clefable was a total rock all game, water gun made hikers a breeze and only swapped for Solarbeam pre E4 in case I needed it for Lapras or Blastoise. Final move set was Body Slam, Sing, Skull Bash and Solarbeam.
Onix was something I never thought I’d use but turned out to be a great addition even with its awful attack stat. At level 45 it easily took care of the Champions Pidgeot and even dealt with most of Agatha’s team. Final move set was Dig, Rock Slide, Slam and Harden.
Venomoth was an incredible addition and something I’ve never used in any play through. Final move set was Psychic, Psybeam, Toxic and Mega Drain
Golduck held its own against anything. Versatile move pool really offset a bit of a lacklustre stat distribution. Final Move set was Surf, Strength, Ice Beam and Confusion.
Muk was awesome. I used it as a kid because it just looked so badass and even though it was a very late addition the thing was clutch. Almost swept Lorelei and took down the champions blastoise despite nearly 20 levels of difference. Final move set was Sludge, Thunderbolt, Harden and Poison Gas.
