One of the most original pokemon campaigns was the masaki promos.
In 1999 the "Communications Evolution Campaign", was held. You were required to mail in a Bill's PC Passcard with one of 5 Pokemon to receive the corresponding evolution. For example, mailing in kadabra + Bill's PC card would award what is considered to be one of the rarest Alakazam card in existence.
I would love to see something like that nowadays.
