Pokemon

Are we playing “Who’s that Pokémon?” with a cloud now? Answer yes

Alright, yes… I’m going to talk about the shape in the sky. I know people already pointed it out. But that’s almost unavoidable at this point.

The moment you see a silhouette like that your brain immediately goes

“who’s that Pokémon?”

We’ve all been conditioned for that at this point — and some of the fun of it is finding the details isn’t it?

Also… please don’t tell my psychiatrist I’m looking for shapes in the sky again and reading way too much into it. She thinks I’m doing really well right now. Let’s keep it that way.

So. Not really making a big theory here. Just something that caught my attention when I rewatched the trailer again.

If anyone wants to check the exact moment I’m talking about, it’s around 2:46 in the trailer (https://youtu.be/B15Ydgm6QtI).

I actually stopped the trailer for a second because the silhouette looked weird, strange even, after the camera started moving. Then I started noticing the rest of the scene. When the camera moves in that ocean shot, one of the clouds briefly forms a pretty clear serpent-like shape.

Also worth noticing it’s the only darker cloud in the sky, which probably explains why almost everyone immediately tried to read it as a Pokémon silhouette. At first you might just think it looks like Gyarados and moved on. But the thing that actually made me think about everything that was happening around it.

Watching the water closely, the ocean surface isn’t just random waves either, there are long lines in the water that almost look like currents running between the islands. The islands themselves aren’t one giant landmass this time either. They’re scattered in clusters with narrow channels between them.

Yeah I know… I’m basically explaining what an archipelago is here. I can already hear the comment buttons fire up, but hear me out here. Right, where were we?

One thing that really stood out is how the water seems to move and funnel between the islands instead of just moving randomly.

That reminded me a bit of how Polynesian navigation worked. Which actually also means I might have watched Moana a bit too many times. Same difference.

But when I started looking it up I realized it’s actually a real thing. Traditional Pacific navigators didn’t really use maps the way we think about them. They paid attention to things like wind direction, ocean swells, current patterns, and even the way clouds formed above islands.

Apparently certain wave patterns can even create paths between islands that sailors could follow across open ocean. And then the clouds can also reveal islands because shallow reefs or lagoons sometimes reflect light into the clouds above them.

So looking at that trailer shot again, a bit closer (basically pressing my face against the screen — very scientific I know) it almost feels like the scene is quietly showing several of those signals at the same time. Currents moving between islands, wind shaping the sky, and these little island chains acting almost like tiny stepping stones.

Which is kind of funny considering the games are literally called Winds and Waves. The way that whole shot is framed makes it feel like the scene is quietly pointing at something important. The cloud, the currents, the islands… they all line up a little too neatly to be random.

The cloud itself might just be coincidence. But the way the scene is framed made me wonder if the environment might actually play a bigger role in exploration this time.

And Pokémon regions usually take a lot of inspiration from real-world places and cultures anyway, so it wouldn’t be that surprising if something like that influenced the design.

While looking into this deeper I also stumbled into a bit of Polynesian mythology. Yes I’m still typing here, I know… stick with me, we’re almost there. A lot of those island traditions have sea guardian creatures (often called taniwha) that are described as long serpent-like beings connected to ocean passages and island channels.

Not saying that’s what the cloud is. Just thought the imagery lined up in an interesting way.

Anyway… yeah I went a bit deep down the rabbit hole on this one. But that’s kind of the fun part of watching trailers, right?

Sometimes the environment is telling you something before the game ever explains it.

Some of the things I ended up reading while going down the hole:
