help on how I can make my Inkay illustrated rare any better :)

I want to draw all my favorite Pokemon as illustrated rares (just for fun) and started with my beloved Inkay, I feel like it looks a bit flat but I don’t know what I can do to improve it 🙁

I thought of lightening up the background but then it wont have that “deep ocean” feel that i wanted :((

I also tried to outline it (tried black and white) but it took away from the “painterly” vibe yk

Any help would be appreciated :))

((you can also tell me what you like about it to boost my ego and keep me motivated to do the other ones;)))

Ignore the text on the card, just threw on something to see what it would look like as a card 🙂

    I think adding depth to the light, to show the inkay is being directly illuminated, would be helpful

    Don’t use white, use 2-3 shades of lighter (not light) blues to highlight the surfaces with most exposure

    Also consider having the light drop off faster in the water since it seems like buddy is really far down there

    Also consider adding bubbles or something else in the environment that might be lit up

    First of all this is ADORABLE!!!!! I‘m obsessed with the composition and color choice. I think making the rest of the body glow a little and reflecting the light from the top would help, as well as making the background towards the bottom of the artwork darker 💜 I‘d love love love to see more! Do you have an Instagram?

    I personally think it’s beautiful! If you’re ever looking to get a physical copy made for yourself/friends/sale, I highly recommend Vograce for low minimum order quantity. You can print it with holographic effects, sparkle, etc, which probably would make it pop a LOT.

    If you really are looking for a critique, the bottom half of Inkay disappears a bit into the water around it. A faint outline glow might improve it a bit, though it is going to hide behind card text so idk if it’s make a huge difference in the end.
