I’ve been working on what I’m calling my “Child Hood Origin Dex” — basically a childhood dream of how I always wanted to complete the Pokédex growing up.
Back then, one thing that always bothered me was that you couldn’t trade Pokémon from Red/Blue/Yellow into Ruby and Sapphire. Because of that, I never really cared about completing the Pokédex past Gold, Silver, and Crystal. 6 months ago i discovered Poké Transporter GB, and that’s what really reignited my interest in finally completing a full Pokédex the way I always imagined. Since I also stopped playing the newer games after X and Y, I figured now is the perfect time to go all in on this.
My goal is to bring every Pokémon forward from its original generation and cartridge. I’m using all original hardware and the actual carts I’ve owned since I was a kid, which makes the process feel a lot more meaningful.
I do have a couple of exceptions:
If I find a shiny in a later game, I’ll replace the original version. For example, I found a shiny Ponyta in FireRed, so that one takes the place of the original.
I’m also allowing event Pokémon, since a lot of them are unique or cooler than standard catches — especially the ones that were only ever available through distributions.
For distribution, I’m using original ROMs with real hardware. I use an EZ Flash cart for Poké Transporter GB and Game Boy distributions, and an R4 card for DS-era events. It saves time on certain Pokémon, but I do have one rule: the event Pokémon has to belong to the generation I’m completing. So something like a Gen 5 event Shiny Palkia wouldn’t count toward a Gen 4 Pokédex.
This whole project is really about fulfilling that childhood vision — being able to transfer everything up from the original games, something I always wished was possible back then. I know the 3DS Virtual Console makes this easier, but I wanted to stick with my original cartridges and do it my “authentic” way.
Right now I’m working on Gen 4. I actually forgot to transfer three Pokémon into Home, so I need to go back and fix that.
