I’m not overly surprised, it was unfortunately a very disappointing game. Too much hand holding, the hub map failed miserably, and no sense of discovery or exploration, whole game is on rails.

A Metroid Prime title underperforming in Japan?
This isn’t even mildly interesting, this is the status quo for a Metroid Prime title in that region.

This doesn’t shock me. Metroid Prime has never sold particularly well in Japan.

Doesn’t help that it’s not the Metroid fans were waiting for. Sure it was fun but having to fight the final boss and babysit was not what I had in mind for Metroid.
Nimble_Natu177
Fuck man, that really sucks to see (in the context of the future of the series).
That being said, its important to remember that Metroid has always been less popular in Japan, and Prime 4 being a heavy mashup of different western genre designs, it didn’t have much hope in Japan to begin with.

I beat the game in like 12 hours. It’s short with a lot of empty space

I’ve seen it for £25 new here in the uk. Most Nintendo games retail £60 here!
Galactikcactus
It’s not an excellent game, It’s not weird
Resident_Durian_478
It’s a shame they messed up with prime 4. Back into hiatus with the series
The_Arpie
It’s been 50% off in the UK since boxing day, Japan is slow to shift dead stock it seems.

Makes sense, the budget for MP4 must be one of their bigger ones considering they restarted development from scratch. Just taking guesses but I assume the biggest budget ever is probably smash bros but those obviously sell 10x what any Metroid game ever will.

Same in Sweden, it’s currently being sold for 36ish euro (399kr) at a few retailers.
I’m quite disappointed the game was as “meh” as it is, I preordered this game when the original Switch released.
NoLocal1776
It would he good if they drop a dlc and maybe a mp mode.

Unusual for a good* Nintendo game

No surpirse, Metroid never sold well in Japan and it’s also just an aggressively mid game at best. First “big” Nintendo game in years I did not feel compelled enough to finish. They really fumbled this game, by the time I was at the third dungeon I completely ran out steam.
I reeeally hope Retro gets another crack at making one though, because the art direction was absolutely phenomenal and all of the fundamental issues I have with it are reportedly a result of the long and convoluted dev cycle with switching studios halfway through and Nintendo project-lead nudging them heavily towards player freedom because of BotW’s success. Which in and of itself could’ve been really cool, don’t ge me wrong, I think it would absolutely be possible to design a more open Metroid game that’s still Metroid at it’s core, but they took all of the wong lessons from BotW. As if the only good thing about that game was the empty space and not the actual player freedom and agency.

A shame, I really liked MP4.
odarkshineo
Its quality is unusual for a Nintendo game.
WigSplitter117
It’s a decent game I enjoyed it for the most part.
Forward-Trade3449
I’d probably rate it a 7/10. Had an okay time, wouldnt play it again. Definitely worth trying out if you can get it for cheaper though
Juggernaut900
Apparently it sold over a million in a month. That makes it a sucess for Metroid. Never did well in Japan
PokeSalad
I couldn’t even come close to finishing this game. Bored to tears within the first few hours, and I absolutely LOVED Metroid prime / remastered
CaptainParadigm42
I liked Prime 4 but I get the gripes people have with it. It felt like a Prime game but had the added annoyance of an overworked acting as a hub. Not very Metroid.
PreferenceGold5167
It didn’t do great anywhere si not a surprise really

One of my biggest gaming letdowns. Purchased day 1 expecting the usual Metroid magic and got a boring mess of a game. Couldn’t even bring myself to finish it. I don’t think it’s worth it at a discount price either.
SouthTippBass
Il buy it when it’s €20.
Alasdair91
Same in the UK. It’s £33 now. Matroid has a cult following, it isn’t mass appeal.

It’s because of the sand…
mjmannella
52% discount, hot damn. Looks like Japanese retailers are just begging people to take the game off their hands.
MessiLeagueSoccer
Hopefully it’s still on sale in a few weeks when I go.
weaklingoverlord
This is good. The only feedback (bad sales) a company need to make a course correction… but will they do it? Hopefully they will not abandon the franchise. I’m apprehensive of a 2D Metroid being released… it is what it is.
Secure-Anywhere-1851
This game isn’t bad but it’s definitely not good either. With all the good games out now and all the sales non Nintendo games get I’m not surprised. Even half price it’s not really worth it it’s like a Ubisoft quality game. I wouldn’t pick it up unless it was 80% off. I bought it used on marketplace and stopped playing after a few hours
NextSmoke397
We won’t be getting another Metroid game for 20 years

Thanks a lot…
If I see this in the USA I’ll get it right away
