Ok so when I said that this was actually a good thing people crucified me, this is actually a good thing now since we can just play 10 bucks less for digital
VolksDK
It’s just bullshit marketing technicalities. They’re claiming that digital is actually getting cheaper and physical stays the same, but the end result will be the same either way. We’ve had this in Europe for a while
CN122
If anyone is buying this I’ve got a bridge to sell ya
Dukemon102
Unlike discs, cartridges still don’t need installation. So saving the storage space is worth the extra price compared to digital for me.
Going pure digital will just end up biting me in the ass when all those bucks saved come back as needing a new Express SD Card.
JamesDaDragN
I only got Ult & Odyssey physical in 2018. Everything else on my Switch has been digital. If digital is indeed being priced lower than physical for Nintendo’s library of games in the future then I’m all for it.
BebeFanMasterJ
Go digital if you want cheaper games. Carts are expensive and the world’s economic state is fucked.
Thebantyone
But you can resell carts if you don’t want to keep the game later. That counts for something
TrayusV
That’s the impression I got. Lower the cost of digital because they don’t have to manufacture the cartridges.
lunar_medjay
Cool. To be fair $10 isn’t about to make much of a difference to me one way or the other, but cool. I think most people understand physical copies being more expensive and those of us who value having that physical media are fine with paying extra for it. At least I do.
Maybe I’m wrong, but it feels like the industry is trending towards trying to get games closer to $100 to cover production costs while also hoping to drive consumers to subscription based services. “Games will be more expensive, but look at the cost of GamePass (or whatever)”. Nintendo, at least, has a nice history of physical media and I’m hopeful they stay in their lane as much as possible as industry trends change.
I know for myself, I value the physical media still.
MutFox
This feels like the long game of charging more for games at the start of this gen.
Then lower the price of digital, to where both physical and digital should have been, and come off looking benevolent with lower digital prices.
It’s very smart.
IceBlue
I don’t understand the announcement though. The point was that this change was prompted by manufacturing costs. But if that just means lower digital prices then how does this help them? Is it just them disincentivizing purchasing the product that makes them less profit by lowering the price of the product that gives them a higher profit margin?
pocket_arsenal
And i’m supposed to just believe that? I can’t imagine Yoshi was always intended to be a 70 dollar game and they just decided to make the digital version cheaper.
EDIT: You can downvote me if you want, but saying that manufacturing costs are the reason while lowering the price of Digital just makes this whole thing stink like bullshit to me. Just feels like another phase in the plan to get rid of physical media.
Infrawonder
So, theoretically, the digital games should be 60$ from now on
ReanimatedPixels
If Nintendo had announced this pricing schema along with the launch of the switch 2 I think they could have avoided a lot of the Nintendo is greedy allegations
BlazedInMyWinnie
Their statement doesn’t clarify anything. They just restated the announcement. Digital games are $10 less than physical but this statement doesn’t mean they’re chopping $10 off the price. It’s still up in the air on what they’ll do to the price when a bigger release comes around.
kcamfork
Nintendo is exhausting me this generation.
Sectac
It is going up though.
KingGouda
As Marlo Stanfield once said ‘Price of the brick going up.’
GrimmTrixX
I mean, it already did. Lol $70 has been the norm since Dead Space remake started it. Sure, it could go to $8]. But we are already pissed it went up to $70 when they have been $50-60 for literally 3 decades. They dont NEED $70 to make profit. They WANT $70 to make gross (read: Disgusting) profits.
WEEGEMAN
Blame the US for crashing the world economy.
lousupremacy
so Yoshi was always gonna be 70 like I thought
Cmdrdredd
I don’t buy every game that comes out. I think too many people are buying everything or buying too much. A few games a year at $70 isn’t that bad. Some titles will last dozens of hours if not more. I don’t find it necessary to buy every new title.
Creative_Eye7413
This makes sense and I’m very happy about this. It’s a good thing
G-Kira
Take Two Interactive: We’ll see about that!!!
Have_A_Jelly_Baby
“Because we did that already starting with TOTK and then for good last year when the Switch 2 released”
ButteredPsycho
You can charge Nintendo fans anything they will pay for it. No spine no backbone just consume.
ChemicalExperiment
I’ll believe it when the next big AAA release comes out. If the next 3D Mario or Zelda releases, I expect it to be $60 USD, with physical of $70. Anything higher and they’re not lowering anything, just staying at the new normal they’ve established of $70 and $80 games. Yoshi is a weird one to start this on, because I can’t tell if it’s meant to be a really big release or a smaller release that would have been $50 ten or so years ago.
bihtydolisu
If its not a new Legend Of Zelda game, who cares? What else does Nintendo have going for it? Mario?
Darragh_McG
Are they going to drop the digital price of DK and Kirby Air Riders?
TheKPL
so now would other big company follow this
entryjyt
good, because I buy digital anyway since i have 2 switches
NohingButRed
So does it affects Europe? Because I only see this news only on US Nintendo site.
Enog
Digital games MSRP is going to be cheaper. Important point to note as not many physical games are actually sold by retailers at full MSRP in the first place. This will only actually be a good thing if digital is consistently cheaper than physical when taking that into account too.
I will reserve my judgement until May and beyond and see how this plays out in the real world.
